Solani booted a bunch of us for no reason, some lame excuse that they no
longer serve our region, whatever that meant.

Please explain what exactly happened.
Solani blocks spammers and trolls.

Forging names and mail addresses is abuse and such accounts are luckily
being removed.

You make good points here, Osaka-san. I especially like the point
that there are tradeoffs between privacy and convenience. Reminds
me of when I first encountered an electronic signature for
checkout at my local hardware store--probably nearly 25 years ago.
Though I used the store regularly, I stopped paying with credit
card. My reasoning was that I did not want to give an implied
consent for them to store my scanned signature in a database.

Yes, my thanks as well to all those who labor to keep ideals of
the interet alive.

So, their making a paper copy with that handheld "zip-zip" thingy
was fine by you, but an electronic copy was a bridge too far?

No judgment here, just gathering data ...

No worries. I probably wasn't explicit enough. I figured the
credit companies all had my signature captured anyway, but also
figured that entering it into an electronic capture device gave
them permission (either implicit or explicit, I tend not to read
the fine print) to actually have it stored in their records.

I'll bet they did that anyway; that during the era of the zip-zip
machines, the mimeographed copy got stuffed into an envelope with
the rest of the day's business receipts and mailed back to the head
office, where one of the data entry clerks (remember all those want
ads for typists with three-digit WPM typing speeds back then?) would
punch it all into a terminal connected to their mainframe. Then the
internet and scanners and magnetic stripes and chip cards came along
and put all those typists out of work.

Oh, I agree, and that's essentially what I was implying. My point
was that using the signature device provided objective endorsement
(so to speak :) that they would legitimately have my signature in
such a format.
