But back to ugly - a topic of great interest - if it's true champeen ugly it must extend beyond sight to other senses - to all other senses to some degree - so it can be smelled, felt, and even heard. A genuine ugly person - and remember, there are few - is one who you can never turn off in your presence. I think in some odd way the movies have improved even as they have deteriorated as today actors are less needed than ever before. Anybody can recite the crap they put out now. When a part calls for an actor - an orator scene or something along those lines - ok, fine, go out and get one. In the meantime we don't need actors. It is time for them to die.

I believe you nailed it. In the beginning, not as obvious now, people would pay to see images move. After a while further demands were put upon the new invention. There is a Hollywood theme park here in Orlando. I enjoy it. The old time HWOOD was fun even though it was probably not. I want fantasy and whimsy with safe adventure rides.

I knew what I could afford and that was about it. But back then you could get a single apartment in some big old beautiful buildings for $75 to $125, sometimes less. But I'll never go there again - not unless somebody buys me a car (and promises to pay for repairs and legal forms and all the other shit you need when you own stuff.

Safe rides, funny. I went to magic mountain with my buddy Charles. He loved the rides. I did not. But I agreed to go on one ride with him - the big log that comes down slow into water and you get a little wet. Anything could happen. The ride looks safe, but the log can come off the rails and pin you into the water with you head beneath the log. I remember as we entered the park - all concrete by the way - he pointed to one ride and told me a just married couple died on it last year, and I responded, "Well, that cinches it, I'm never getting married." Anyway, I'm a penny arcade, freakshow guy when it comes to parks and carnivals and so forth. It's fun to watch a long line of a hundred people waiting for an hour to take a ride that ends in a minute. Dedication, I'll give them that.

I'll reply for Ollie. He is like everyone else on earth, he enjoys a good disaster now and then - who doesn't? I don't like the high speed ones you're talking about, the sharp curves, everything coming apart at once. I like when the ride is innocuous on the surface with hidden dangers, like the log into the water contraption. Anything man made can go wrong. When it happens I like it in slow motion with enough time to hear someone yell, "Oh my God, look", and enough time to turn you head to see the accident before it's even happening. You can see it unfolding. It's slow motion in real time - that's the way to enjoy a good disaster. The big old buildings, the dry air where I'd keep the big french windows rolled out and all I'd get was the occasional fly or bee - not a bunch of tropical style creepy crawlers. Hollywood was scummy where I lived. But it's all relative. To me it was luxury, when I had a place to stay. I still consider Hollywood my hometown. But I'll never go there again - not unless somebody buys me a car (and promises to pay for repairs and legal forms and all the other shit you need when you own stuff.

When it happens I like it in slow motion with enough time to hear someone yell, "Oh my God, look", and enough time to turn you head to see the accident before it's even happening. You can see it unfolding. It's slow motion in real time - that's the way to enjoy a good disaster. That's why every time we see the WTC going down on TV they always show it with the planes in slow motion. "Live Fast, Die Young, and Do It In Slow Motion!"

I hope my theme park days are over. I was spoiled by being able to go to them. Although anyone who has never been to one has not missed anything. Real life is a theme park.

One time in L.A. driving the cab I had a young guy from Philly in back and when I mentioned Allentown he went, "Oh yeah, Dorney Park", and I'm thinking, "How the hell does this kid from Philly know about little old Dorney Park?", because the one I remembered was ultra quaint with a duck pond and a lot of penny arcades. There was only one roller coaster and it was high and fast enough for me. But it seems that in my absence the park had undergone some changes. It was a major sized attraction now.

When I went back in 91 I was doing a lot of walking. I remember one time walking past the monstrous layout and saw a giant line of people standing near some steps leading up to what seems a most popular attraction. I was amazed at how long they were willing to wait. As I walked I watched. It took some time for the line to start moving. Then whatever the ride was swung into action and within a minute or so it was over. Sort of like life itself, wait in line for forever for just one more crack at it, then boom, next thing you know it's over!

I stood in a lot of lines. Worse was for the Jaws ride at Universal. It was asugust. Hot. Humid. It is a long story like the line. Then just before we were to get on it the ride broke. Had to decide to wait it out. We did. What a ride it wasn't.

LOL. I used to occasionally walk up the Hollywood Hills to Cahuenga Peak, the highest spot in Hollywood with an almost 360 degree view of the whole town. Hollywood and the basin on one side, the massive Valley on the other. The peak is very close to Universal. I'll bet you've seen it going through the Cahuenga pass. Anyway, from the top of that big hill, almost the whole lay out of the Universal Tour could be seen. The shark in the water could be seen in its entirety. I never took the tour but used their pool a number of times. Not as good as the Roosevelt, but nice to mix things up now and then. Funny, never hit the wax museum in Hollywood either, even though I lived only a block from it.

"Yeah man, I know what you mean", the guy in the mobile wheelchair told me. "I hiked Cahuenga Peak once on acid. I was out there man. I could see the giant shark way down below. I thought I could dive into it even though it was a half mile away. I took the plunge. Hit some rocks, got all fucked up. I tell the ladies I got the wounds in Iraq. Sometimes I'll tell them I used to be a fisherman in Alaska and one day I slipped off the boat and a bunch of sharks got me.

The star system is good. Just use it for active threads, delete the stars later or let them slide away into the past. I got on you a bit earlier for not using the star system. I saw a bunch of unanswered posts on page two that I had starred. But I can't fault you for not responding into those threads as most of my posts in those threads were directed at Bozo or his alter ego. So you are doing a good job and get a passing grade from me.
