"The ship in Tuesday's crash, Dali, was involved in at least one prior
accident when it collided with a shipping pier in Belgium.

That 2016 incident occurred as the Dali was leaving port in Antwerp and
struck a loading pier made of stone, causing damage to the ship’s stern,
according to VesselFinder.com, a site that tracks ships across the world.
An investigation determined a mistake made by the ship’s master and pilot
was to blame.

No one was injured in that crash, although the ship required repair and a
full inspection before being returned to service. The pier – or berth –
was also seriously damaged and had to be closed.

VesselFinder reports that the Dali was chartered by Maersk, the same
company chartering it during the Baltimore harbor incident.

The 9-year-old container ship had passed previous inspections during its
time at sea, but during one such inspection in June at the Port of San
Antonio in Chile, officials discovered a deficiency with its "propulsion
and auxiliary machinery (gauges, thermometers, etc)," according to the
Tokyo MOU, an intergovernmental maritime authority in the Asia-Pacific
region."

Your ignorance is incredible and I mean that literally. You cannot be so

Harbour pilots are way more skilled at steering ships than any seagoing

The return of power was probably the emergency lighting generator(s)
kicking in. They will not provide propulsion, just lighting, hence they
wouldn't/couldn't prevent shit happening.

See above. The delay in the return to power would indicate emergency
systems coming into action. Those emergency generators don't always have
an instant startup. That said, I have worked in places where the
emergency generators started within seconds of a power outage and could
go to full power and speed from cold.

Unlikely. That's not how ship engines are started and stopped.

The pilot cannot be blamed if the ship has no propulsion. No propulsion
equals no steering. It would be worse heading downriver on an outgoing
tide. You really have no clue about how ships operate, eh?

Common sense most likely determined that. Here, a video to educate

Funny, I was wondering that exact same thing about you!

Correction, the rudder *might* have been working Had power resumed) but
would be ineffective when the ship has lost propulsion and drifting.
Tides can worsen matters greatly. For instance, an outgoing tide would
mean the ship drift and the water flow might match - result - no
steerage at all.

Yup, no propulsion = no steerage regardless of whether the rudders
themselves can be physically actuated.

You are the incredibly ignorant one here. An anchored ship always faces
the anchor. That means when a ship in forward motion drops the anchor,
the ship would eventually swing around to face the anchor. After the
engine is turned off, the ship's heading will always be against the
current and facing the anchor.

Another pilot mistake. Belgium also hires "Homer Simpson"-type of
pilots. The "stern" of a ship is the rear-end of the ship. Apparently
the pilot put the ship in reverse by mistake and rear-ended ship against
the pier.

Apparently you are wrong again. Do you know how ships steer? Unlike a
car, it is the the back, not the front.

At least you used the word "eventually". Ships don't pivot very fast
and the anchor would help stop for forward motion until about stopped.
Then the currents take over and eventually it will swing around.

Once stopped, they can pull the anchor up and drift with the currents if
that is better at the tine and position.

People say "a little knowledge is a very dangerous thing". That applies
to you.

For humanity's sake, instead of wasting time arguing till the cows come
home, why don't you watch the collision of the ship against the base of
the Baltimore Key Bridge? It's all over the internet.

Before the collision, the ship appeared to have lost the lights, and
then the lights came back on. Then the ship suddenly pulled to the
starboard side (right hand side) and impacted the bridge.

The only reasonable explanation for the ship suddenly jerking to the
starboard side is that the anchor had snared the sea bottom and the
anchor chain was thus pulling on the right hand side of the bow, because
reportedly the ship had deliberately dropped the anchor.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. A ship's propeller can spin
backward, just like your car tire can spin backward when in reverse
gear. Are you really that dumb, or merely trying to drive up your number
of posts to catch up to Peeler's?

Ah yes, when proven wrong start with personal attacks and name calling.
Classy.

Having owned boats, I know how they operate. I KNOW HOW THE REAR END
SWINGS. Show me where the propeller was going in reverse.

Facts is what matters and you have shown none, only your opinion. Ahow
a cite please.

A pilot on board the cargo ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge
tried to swing it clear of a collision by dropping its port anchor to
pivot it away, authorities said.

Indeed, and to you as well.

Wait for the accident report before speculating based on
internet videos.

Now you have proven my point, that dropping the anchor can swing the
ship around. Unfortunately the "Homer Simpson" Baltimore harbour pilot
dropped the anchor from the wrong side so the ship pulled towards the
bridge support instead. Maybe he doesn't know which side is called
"port" and which side is called "starboard". Maybe the anchor buttons on
the control panel which have been labeled "left" and "right" instead of
"port" and "starboard" to make it more intuitive for "Homer Simpson"
Baltimore harbour pilots.

No, you've proven you were incorrect. The front of the ship hit, not
the rear that swung around.

You can take courses in boating that explain and demonstrate that sort
of thing.

Yes, but you have not shown that they were reversed. Your seamanship
skills are lacking and making you look silly.

Here is a simple thing you can do to learn how the rear of the ship hit
pulling away.

Pretend you are a ship.
Pull into a parking spot and keep your tires right next to the line on
the driver's side. Back out and cut the wheel hard to the right.
Notice how you cross the line, just like a ship steers using rudder.

For humanity's sake, watch the freaking video of the ship accident. The
ship suddenly jerked to the right and hit the Baltimore Key Bridge. Of
course it could not totally swing around, you freaking idiot, because
the bridge fell down and trapped it there.
