If that ever happens, would and should China recognize and support the weaker

Could the US government really preclude any secession movement, if not, how
could the US expect China to cooperate with the stronger side given its current
position regarding Taiwan?

China will not interfere in the other people's politics and internal affairs
or businesses. Hence, as usual, China will not likely take sides.

But the world can include their views to take sides on the weaker side to
split. The US government will not be able to prevent their split, because
the American's motto - freedom, freedom and freedom.

Hence, if there is breakup in US, the internal support from the world to
recognise both party into two separated USA will definitely be supported.
When that happened, there will be joy and delights and celebrations not only
by Americans, but by the world, too.

Once the US becomes two independent countries, there will be more
separations from it, too. In the two independent US countries, there should
be further separation into republics, too.

In any case, US independent breakup is the US government that China will not
interfere. If US dies to the dust, it is US business. However, China will
not allow any US independent country if any to interfere China on Taiwan.
Make no mistake, China will snag and snap at US or any country in trying
interfere Taiwan.

I am not sure I can totally agree with you on the interpretation of non-interfering.
When is interfering interfering?

When Nixon offered to help ROC (Taiwan) a seat in the United Nation, Jiang
declined Nixon's offer. Jiang's refusal to establish the ROC as an independent
nation is the foundation of the One China principle and the Shanghai Communique.
The One China principle clearly delineates when is interfering.
However, such agreement from both sides of a still civil war is rare. And without such
agreement, when is interfering interfering is a lot murkier.

For example, China congratulated Biden's electoral win a week after other world
leaders. But the Trump camp still claimed the Democrat had stolen the election.
Was China's congratulation still a form of interference?
