It is all about buying votes.

I did not mention that I got $2,000 tax rebate on my heat pump thanks to
Biden but my vote does not come that cheap. Besides the rebates
probably got gobbled up by producers of heat pumps.

That will happen with tuition rebates. The universities will just raise
tuition cost.

I feel sorry for you and your country. Future historians and history
students will have a good laugh at you. In fact they'll laugh their
heads off.

I am sure other countries are pleased that the USA is going downhill and
fortunately it appears to be the same for other western democracies.

Wall Street Journal had an article about that. Us vs Them. Russian,
China, North Korea, some middle east countries have been working
together. A wrong move on either side could trigger a very nasty war.

There are few other major countries where getting an education results
in major debt to the educated. They realize that educating the public
benefits everyone and the country itself.

When US students decide that getting an education is just to costly to
proceed, the country will be the loser.

Our system has been bonkers for a while. Kids have been told to get a
good job you need a college education. Some companies will not hire
anyone unless they have a degree.

So, kids take courses they like, Interpretive Dance, Theater, 4th
Century Greek Sculpture. They have big buck in debt and cannot find a
decent job.

Finally companies are not always requiring a degree and some kids are
now going into the trades making a very good living.

I was the General Manager of my company and started working in 1963 with
no degree, just some night school. The last few years working, two of
my guys had degrees and made half my salary. Neither used their school
taught skills for the job.

1945 was the end of WWII. 1963 was 18 years after the war. Most of the
people in that era didn't have high school diploma. Anyone who wanted to
work could get a decent job because the US became the manufacturing
centre of the world. The US was the only one standing after the war. The
whole Europe was crippled by WWII and had to pay the US back the
Lend-Lease debt. Great Britain finished pay back the Lend-Lease debit it
owed the US in 2006.

Like you said above, many kids go to university to get a degree. They
pick the easiest degree that can find.

I remember in the 1980s my university was full of visa students from
mainland China. Most of them studied business administration. They all
became CEOs of major corporations after they went back to China. Note
that in the 1980s those Chinese kids must have parents in high places to
be able to afford the money and opportunity to go to university in
Canada. After the first wave of MBA visa students, most the Chinese kids
came here for medicine, science and engineering degrees.

Yes, education is a business and subject to supply and demand and most
students are there just to get any kind of degree and the demand for
education has driven up the price.

And to add insult to injury, college is now becoming useless:

University education is expensive without government subsidy. My Tuition
fee was a bargain when I went to university in the 1980s in Canada. The
tuition fees are much higher now because the government has reduced the
subsidy, not because of "supply and demand". International visa students
have to pay full tuition (about 3 times higher than domestic students).

When I went there was no subsidy. I managed to make enough money
working summers to pay tuition and even buy a used car to commute. Grad
school I had a teaching assistantship and then a business sponsored
fellowship. When I finally finished I had no debt and money in my
pocket. I could afford to send our three sons without borrowing. One
son now works at the university and our granddaughter went free.

By "subsidy" I don't mean government giving you money in the form of
"grants". The government absorbs a lot of the costs of running a
university. The university I went to occupies a whole peninsula off
Vancouver, B.C. The university campus is on "university endowment land".
Apparently it meant the government gave the peninsula to the university
for free (i.e. endowment). Both the provincial government and the
federal government subsidize the cost of education (all levels of
education, not just university education). Canada is socialistic, from
the cradle to the grave.

I am sure the US also subsidize the schools and universities, except
those "private schools/universities" for super rich kids whose parents
have money coming out of their ears.

I should not have put it that way and maybe should have wrote no easy
money to borrow or scholarship. Guess I meant in those days I was on my
own or dependent on parents alone. Not sure I would count state
universities for residents tuition vs non residents but it is cheaper
for residents.

Might also mention I went to a Catholic boys high school where tuition
was $80 a year but today is $16,000. Demonstrates that cost of
education is up all over. Back in those days teachers were priests
living in poverty where today they have all lay teachers.

Our catholic high school tuition was paid by our parish covered by
donations. Just looked, now $9400.

In Canada, Catholic high schools are usually "private schools". Private
schools usually cater to the well-to-do. I think other "normal" schools
in the US must be a lot more affordable than $9400 a year. I don't think
too many parents can afford to send their kids to $9400-a-year high school.

In Philadelphia, there are thousands of kids in the Catholic schools.
The school I mentioned is just for boys still has 800 students. I don't
know how it is paid now but much (most?) was paid by the parish the
student is from and that is supported by donations of the parishioners.
Tuition was well subsidized.

There is a girls school in the same are, slightly smaller in size, same
cost.

There are 35,000 students in area Catholic schools about 10%.

The Catholic schools in Philadelphia were rated one of the best systems
in the country, the public schools among the worst rated.

Just checked Catholic school where my little granddaughter goes and it
is $7,400. I did not burden our sons with a religious upbringing and
DIL is Episcopalian. DIL is a public high school teacher and will not
send their "little Catholic" to public school with today's woke culture.

I have been surprised with less well to do sending their sons where I
went. I just checked and noted that the Catholic school here where Joe
Biden went is $34,000, two times as expensive to where I went. I think
when he attended it was ten times as much.

The Archdiocese offers need-based financial aid. However, merit
scholarships offered by affiliated third parties are listed below for
informational purposes; administration of these scholarships is handled
directly by the awarding institution and award decisions are the sole
discretion of the awarding institution.

We need to take a page from Javier Milei and
end ALL subsidizes, including unwed mother,
corm alcohol, yada, yada, yada. He also
ended all transfers of money from the fed
to the states. He sees it, and I agree, as
too much of a temptation to corruption.

Back in our day, university degrees opened doors to opportunities. The
better the degree, the more lucrative the door that was presented.
Now they open the door to Starbucks.

Note that you said "better the degree". Yes, Engineering, Business
Administration, Computer Science, medical. Not dance, theater, puppetry.
