Like when people say, "I don't want to fart here in this crowd", is it because they care about the crowd, or is it because they care about how the crowd might think of them if you are revealed to be the source of the stink. The less people I know now the more grateful in some ways I am. Having no social life allows me to pick up some stink now and then. I can't smell it - not all the way - but it's probably there. He knows he stinks and it's not going to change, so he blames things beyond himself for the aroma, even going so far as to purposely step in dog shit so it shows on his shoes so when people smell him he can use the dog shit as an excuse for his own stench.

Overwhelmingly I'd say they don't a rat's ass one way or another. Some
would indeed intentionally step in dog shit but that's because their
nuts. Back in the old days, all bums wore suits and a hat. They didn't

It started right around the time of Woodstock. I did a lot of hitch hiking back then. Most people used their thumb the old fashioned way. Some really put a lot of oomph into it, others not so much. But after a few years I began to see more and more of them appearing, hitch hikers who really reflected the non caring attitude of the era by hitch hiking with their backs and not their faces to the cars. They might put their hand out now and then, but they never looked back at prospective rides. Had a real lazy look to it. But now that I'm older I see it makes sense, which doesn't mean it did to them (I'm not giving in just yet) - because they're either going to pick you up or they're not, so why a big song and dance with it? Many times I'd be on the interstate - not allowed, have to use the ramp - walking with a big heavy bag to the next ramp where maybe I'd see more cars getting on. I'd be on the road just hiking along and somebody would pull over honking their horn. No thumb, nothing. Could have been the big bag. So if I ever want to be known as "The Interstate Killer" that's what I'd do, I'd walk the roads with a huge bag over my shoulder waiting for my next victim to pick me up.

Bumming is one of my favorite topics. I'm talking bumming in all its many facets, not just the panhandler. Everyone is a bum of sorts. Even a worker. He doesn't work as a bum, but he had to bum to get the job. I know what you mean about suits and a hat, they look good - but underneath the reek is probably way worse than a dude in a thin flowing fabric that breezes away stagnation. That's why the old bums you think are so cool wore the suit and the hat - and the shoes: To hold the smell in. So I guess you're right, at least they cared. They were embarrassed, but they didn't show it. Why? Because they were tough. They were "My Generation Strong."

Twice I went cross country in my own cheap car with not one red cent to my name. I'd go to a highway rest stop and bum money for gas. I'd point to my license plate which was out of state usually. Some would say no. I never persisted. I hated asking, but it beat working to pay my own way. Some people would say, "Do you really want it for gas?", and I'd say, "Of course", and they'd say, "Follow me", and they'd take me to a gas station to fill up my tank. Some incredible stories about bumming - many of them. But even better than the stories is the topic itself and how it extents way beyond bumming as we know it to all kinds of stuff. Here's a poem I wrote about bumming. I was not a street corner panhandler as the poem says. I hung out at the poolroom and made people laugh and would sometimes get a beer or more out of it. A self made professional in my own mind. Anyway, I bummed around a lot. So I wrote this poem about being a bum - a panhandler. But it's not really about panhandling, it's more about not being confined by a job. I wrote this about 40 years ago.

The Panhandler

Things used to be great back 12 years or more
I used to panhandle money - always made a great score
I had a really nice spot in a good part of town
All them generous neighbors used to spread the cash around

Then this thing called recession brought despair to my street
All these panhandling chislers moved in to compete

There's more of them today, tougher times really. When it was just white bums it had to be easier, not that their bumming style is any better than the black ones. I'm talking about sheer numbers - it's got to be a tough job.. I know a few of them. Picked them up in the cab, a free ride up the hill or whatever. It's legal to panhandle here - but you gotta buy a license.

One time in my teens in PA I needed a dime to make a phone call. I saw a guy walking out of a bar. He was a bit lit up, happy. I asked him for a dime. He fished into his pocket and found one. I thanked him and moved on. Then I heard, "Wait a minute, come back here." He was waving his arms. "Oh no, what's he going to do, ask for his money back?" Well, sort of. He said, "Let me see that dime", then put it in his pocket and handed me a quarter. I told him all I wanted to do was make a phone call. I thanked him again and moved. And again I heard him call out, "Hey, wait a minute, come back here." I went back and once again he asked back what he had given me. I handed hm the quarter and he handed me a dollar. Wow. I thanked him and moved on, slowly, waiting for him to call me back again - and guess what? - I'm still waiting. True story except for the "still waiting" part. But that day I really was walking away with a cringe in my step, going slow, hoping to hear him call me back again. Pretty funny.

Yes, I have noticed the same, many times from a long time ago. What if you were forced to choose one or the other for life. Which would you take, tits without ass, or ass without tits. I find it funny as we know it would be to see pictures form the 60-70s of long haired men. In 80's it got way out weird and than bam it was over. I respect the barbers who stuck it out.

I get the buzz cut twice a year, letting it grow each time till I can't take it anymore. Low maintenance is a big part of my comfort zone. When it comes to cosmetics, who knows, in some ways maybe the barbers had it better when long hair was in. Not for all of course, but for those who could afford it, they would need regular professional attention to maintain their long haired image. The good barbers know that the human head has seen every hair style imaginable since the dawn of time. How many things can you do with a head other than maybe shrink it. Yes, the ones who did not have wealthy clients stuck it out with long hair in vogue and often suffered financially because of it. But they knew, because they are barbers and they are taught first thing in barber school to always remember and never forget that, "The head comes before the hair, always." They are shown a variety of pictures of bald heads both male and female. Skull after skull until they get the picture. It's like mowing the lawn. A good mower respects what's beneath the grass and a good barber respects what's beneath the hair.

I used to wonder how the dentists could stay in business with so many people walking around not needing fillings and other necessary stuff. They make up for it with cosmetic crap. Peer pressure plays a role, I guess. I like having teeth. I'm missing 10 of them, but 4 were wisdom teeth. Anyway, I used to wonder about that, if dentists would survive if everyone had near perfect teeth. But I wonder no longer. They'll find a way. Even someone with perfect teeth will need to get numbed up for some cosmetic procedure. Then while they're all numbed up the dentist puts a few 'starter' holes in nearby teeth without the patient feeling it. Even if it doesn't happen that way exactly, they will always find new ways to make people need them, even if it's only in the minds of their patients.

Don't forget to come in for your checkup and cleaning 4 times a year. Once we get our fingers inside your mouth we will make astonishing things happen.

Periodontal disease is the one they got me going with. Constant cleanings.. As long as I can afford it i will go along with it. Got a crown this year. First one. Missing one molar and the wise guy teeth were yanked decades ago. Dentist are real Medicine men hawking miracle cures for non existent problems.
