The bottom line is Schlomo is now 3 1/2 years sober and attending AA
meetings regularly. The director from Schlomo's facility died from a
heroin overdose, as did 3 of his staff. A more corrupt place never
existed, but somehow it worked for my brother and many, many others. One
will never get rich working for one of these places, but it's possible
if you're the #1 director.

It's huge and it's bogus, all of it. At first I thought you were talking about physical rehab. I am not dismissing that although there's probably a lot of bullshit there too. But the kind you're talking about, I'd say it's all bullshit. If someone comes away 'cured' it's because they were heading that way anyway. It's like taking a mild pain pill for a mild headache and it goes away in 20 minutes and you credit the pill but you don't know for sure - the headache might have gone away on its own. Tattooed group leaders, eh? Sounds more like an exorcism than rehab. Maybe they beat the addiction out of their customers.

I think tattoos like money are the fucking root of all evil, and women getting them at the rate they are is just beyond all fucking reason. I was on my bike the other day pedaling past a pretty big tattoo parlor and I stopped right in front of it and blocked the doorway and scowled at them like an old crazy Jew with an Uzi tucked away under his belt and they all stared back at me for an instant thinking another crazy asshole wants to kill us all cuz we're inking them all up and their fucking Daughters.

Tattoo parlors were not legal in PA when I was a kid. So they had a certain outlaw label to them. Rarely did you see kids my age with tattoos. I wanted one. I wanted attention and was ready to do anything to get it, other than maybe murder or something that might result in a long prison term.

At the time the Lehigh County Fair was one of the largest on the east coast and came to Allentown once a year in September. I was 13 walking the midway when I noticed a tented tattoo parlor. I did not go to the fair with a tattoo in mind, didn't even know they had them. I went in. I wanted something tough, a skull or a sword, but they all cost too much - thank God looking back. He had some tattoos in my range but they were all mild. I decided to go with the rose. $7.00 He did it free hand. After he was done he asked what name I wanted below the stem of the rose. I told him I had no idea. "How about Mom?", he said. I said no. Then remembering my name was Tom I asked him to put that in. And it's still there to this day.

I wanted attention in school. I had been drawing fake tattoos and other forms of massagery on my arms for some time. The teacher saw my rolled up sleeve and the tat and ordered me to go to the restroom and wash it off.

"Sorry Teach, I can't do that?", I said with a snide attitude. This was a very small mind at work, my mind at that time - yet I am proud of the childishness of it, that I got the real tattoo just to be able to orchestrate the following sequence.

"Why? Why can't you do it?", she demand.

"I just can't, that's all", I said.

Again she demanded to know why at which time I raised my voice and turned to face the class and yelled, "Because it's real", rubbing it with my hand to prove it.

I got the attention I wanted. This was 61 years ago and it's still there. Within 3 days of getting that rose etched into my arm I wanted it removed. I even went back to the carnival the following year to see about having it done.

"Can't do it", said the carny tattooist, "but I can put something over it."

I went in to have my one and only tattoo removed and wound up buying another one - not over the original as he had suggested but on the other arm. I was and am an idiot. But I more than make up for it in other ways. In my 20s and beyond if I went to the shore or a swimming pool I'd find myself sometimes walking with my arms folded over each other to mask the tats. What an idiot. Again though - proud of it.

A good many rehab people a able for life to successfully avoid the drugs they despise. They settle down. They find work. Usually as a rehab counselor. The guy stopped using drugs but went even deeper into the drug world. His local rehab center was losing business as drug use in that area was diminishing. He will have to find a rehab job in some other area further from home. Not good. Or he can maybe do everything in his power, along with the help of his fellow counselors, to bring drug use back to the area. Last time I spoke with my addict friend he told me he doesn't know how they're going to do it, but he and the other counselors have vowed not to give up even if they have to personally go out into the community and sell drugs to recruit new addicts to counsel.

If you're thinking what I think you're thinking you're wrong. Tattoos have long been vilified in our society. People with tats were looked on as possible trouble. I get it, guys in prison, young outcasts like me looking for attention, and so forth - these were usually the people getting tattoos. Also sailors and so forth. But as a rule they were rarely seen on women or young people. Some over centuries have looked upon intentional scarring of the flesh as disrespecting God's house. When I was in the reform school I played chicken with another kid with a lit cigaret burning between our forearms which we had placed side by side. The burn was bad. I went to the infirmary for it. Later I was "placed on line", a form of punishment where you have to stand for x about of days except for sleep time and to take a crap. Even to eat you had to stand. I got 3 days, not a long sentence. But I asked the Brother why. "I didn't hurt anybody, it's my own skin." The Brother said, "No, it is not your own skin, it is God's house."

God gave me 3 days on line....................... So tell me Bozo, am I correct in presuming your reasons for tat inappropriateness is related to camps in WW2 Germany?

Aside from all that, people get tats for the same reason guys walk around with pythons or parrots on their shoulders. But it can get addicting. To some anyway. It's like the old bumper stickers. Have you ever seen a car so covered in bumper stickers that you can't see an inch of the car? How did it happen? Well, there are some rare characters who start out wanting to sticker up their car because it gets them to traveling, picking up different stickers from all the states they roll through. But some start out with just one bumper sticker. And for a few days they love it. The attention. Sometimes a honking horn and a thumbs up from the driver. Cool. But then it gets old, the novelty wears off. But the sticker does not come off that easy. The only solution is to put a new one on top of it. After a while the sticker pile becomes too thick. Newer stickers are placed to the sides of the original. And then it becomes a project. "Nobody has to like what the stickers say", the proud project manager declared, "it's the pure mass of them that's the draw." So he keeps adding stickers wherever there are bald spots on the car until finally he has it covered all the way. He appears on a TV talk show where he tells the nation how he came to "tat' his entire car, how with him it started with just one and only one, and how the attempted replacement started him to adding more stickers to the car. Another bumper sticker enthusiast is on the show. He also give his story of how it all came down. "I was into it all the way from the start", he says, "committed, eager - stopping here and there state to state shouting, "Whoopee, there's another one", only to realize it's not good enough for my car - after all, I have my standards." For many of these dopers their only way "back" to normalcy, having a job and a roof over their head, is to get a job. But doing what? Many wind up in the rehab industry, working as counselors. Many are pure scum. I know, I have met them. Predators too. I gave up on AA years ago. But just to prove to myself that I am an open minded guy capable of admitting he can wrong I recently attended an AA meeting and have become a full-time member. They told me I had to have a higher power. They wanted to know what it was? "What's your higher power?", they kept asking, at the same time repeating, "You can pick anything, anything you want." But I had no higher power. I do not believe in God. I tried the old, "I have no higher power, but I am the lower power" routine on them and they wouldn't go for it. They kept demanding to know who or what my higher power was. I felt rushed, pressured, wasn't able to think clearly - which may ultimately be a good thing, flying on intuition and instinct - and I just blabbed it out: "Bozo. Bozo is my higher power." To which they replied, "Who the fuck is Bozo?", to which I replied, "What fucking difference does it make who he is, he's my higher power, and if you don't want me calling him down on your ass I'd advise you to quit with all the question, NOW!"

To which they replied, "Who the fuck is Bozo?", to which I replied, "What fucking difference does it make who he is, he's my higher power, and if you don't want me calling him down on your ass I'd advise you to quit with all the question, NOW!"

I like it. "What's your damned higher power damn you" screamed the moderator of the dope and meth tattoo rehab group!

According to Shlomo, who's an active member of AA, you can use Bozo as
your Higher Power, providing he is clean and sober. Can you attest to
the fact that Bozo is totally straight? If you have your doubts, you can
always convert.
