This hearty Oxtail Soup Recipe is thicker than a soup, but not quite a
stew. Rich and full of veggies, you are going to love this flavor!

Course: Main Dishes, Soup, Salad & Sandwich

Servings: 4 people

Ingredients
4 lbs oxtail
1 large onion diced
4 cloves garlic minced
4 large carrots diced
2 cup spinach
2 cup baby kale
3 cup beef broth
salt & pepper

Instructions
Season oxtail well on all sides with salt and pepper.
In a dutch oven (or large pot), drizzle olive oil all over the bottom
and brown all sides of each ox tail. Once they are all brown, remove and
place them in a bowl. Add the onion and garlic to the pot, sautee until
soft and translucent.

Return the oxtail, plus all the juices that have collected in the bowl,
into your dutch oven. Add the spinach and kale and pour in the beef
broth. Cover, bring it to a boil and then reduce heat. Let it simmer for
3 hours. Once the meat is tender and falling off the bone, toss in the
carrots and cook until they are soft.

This dish is thicker than most broth-based soups but not as thick as
stew. I love this stew just like it is on a cold day. But it's also
delicious over rice or with egg noodles.

That's very selfish of you. Some poor ox is roaming about with out his
tail and you don't have the decency to eat it? You must learn to think
of others, even if the other is just an ox.

Judith, I see you are trying to bring rec.food.cooking to our group. Why? Did you fall out of favor over there, or what? I went there the other day and saw you had posted recipe type stuff into threads that didn't seem to drift randomly into unplanned topics. This tells me you're trying to kiss up to the RFC people in some way, to prove to them that you are a good girl and will play by the rules. So you come to our group seeking haven. We give it to you. But do you appreciate it? I don't know. That is why I am asking Ollie to help me institute a new policy for newcomers to our group - a policy that allows them to be themselves and say whatever they want to say at all times, but only after they have openly admitted they are lucky to have been accepted into the greatest news group of all time.

It's funny, I don't like making other people's recipes - they always turn out bad - but I do enjoy reading them from time to time. First thing I look for is the list of ingredients. If there are too many ingredients I stop reading right there. It has to be simple. Like with the ox tail, the recipe sounds simple enough, I suppose you could substitute any meat. Plus even though I like browned meat I don't think it's necessary for soups and stews.

Stews will have lots of items but that is the point of a stew. I like to taste what I am eating. Unless it is shit. Then it needs to be in a stew. A shit stew.

Perhaps it is my preoccupation with all things turd that trends my tastes toward soups and stews. I basically live on that stuff. When I say a lot of ingredients scare me off a recipe I'm talking more about the spices and other oddball purposely exotic sounding spices that few people have in their cupboards. I see too many spices and I pass the recipe by right away. My stews are great. I am a good prepper. My stews sometimes look like shit. Yes, that's it - they go in looking like shit and they come out looking like stew.

All battles must be fought alone - and you will be alone for the rest of your life. You're just starting to round into form. Soon you will be great physical shape - the kind of shape that comes with fighting one battle after another all your life. Soon you will begin to win some of those battles.. You will become happy and strong. You will also become addicted to the battle. You will become so good at winning that every day you feel obligated to find a battle somewhere. Then you will look back on the old days - the days of NOW - and you will shed tears of great regret knowing that the past was your time and you let it slip away by griping about it all the time instead of seizing each day and eating it like freshly slaughtered battle meat.

I like the food group. The helpful ones over there make it good. The Dsl1 person is very helpful. I do not force threads on those people. But if one changes topic and I like the way it rolls I will go with it. Some people - and I believe you are one of them Judith - like to lay down the law with the newbies. I have seen it. Not just you. From the few newsgroups I have visited I have determined it is not unique to any one group - they are all the same with some people feeling more in charge, usually because they were there first. But I have also noticed that some members who have been there a long time and are very helpful also do not complain about topics changing within threads - they simply move on from them. The ones who complain are part of the problem they complain about - maybe even the main reason. Personally I think the food group is very well run and most of the people are helpful with a few snob types sticking out as always. You know the type. They devote each day to putting down trolls (newcomers who don't accept their philosophies to the letter), but without the trolls they would have nothing to talk about. It's that way in lots of groups. But the food group seems busy and strong. I would not try to improve it. Sometimes trying to improve things destroys them. Like that typewriter I threw against the wall in my 20s. It had a stuck key and I tried to fix it. I did fix it.. But it made other keys around it bend. Each new attempt to fix it resulted in more unintended damage until finally I just snapped and threw it against the wall.

"There, that'll fix you."

That may explain why you never achieved the fame of Hemingway. The
talent was there, the typewriter wasn't.

I am not a writer. Not in the true sense. And I don't want to be, not on the basis of most writer types I've met - all mostly assholes. Truth is I don't know what I am. A human being. I have small talents. Many of them.. But I am great at nothing. I could be great. But that takes work. I am more against work than I am for being great.

If it weren't for the computer I wouldn't write at all. Very little anyway.. I've owned typewriters and would go years without using them. It was not until I got internet and especially email, before I discovered the groups, that I started to write a bunch. I did it as a kid. With a pen. But I was an incorrigible in public school. I wouldn't do anything they told me to do. I was sent to a reform school as a result. You can say no at the reform school but you are going to pay for it dearly. A pretty brutal ultra disciplined place. But they had an actual school. Had it been a public school I probably would have said fuck you, but the reform school had a typing class and it was mandatory as were most things at the Philadelphia Protectory. I am glad I learned. I wanted to learn. I am fast with it, about 70 words a minute. But I have to stop when I type numbers and icons. I kind of cheated at the reform school, doing just enough to teach myself what I wanted to learn so I could write without using a pen. Later one day in my 20s or 30s I saw someone using a computer keyboard - in an office or something - and without touching it, just watching them using it - I knew if I ever got a type writer again it would be a computer. I like the keyboard. Bozo says I am a typist. He thinks that's a great put down. But it's the truth. I do type and send off a lot of stuff that I'd probably rip up half way through if I were writing it with pen and paper. But that's just one more reason why I like the computer - especially the web aspect of it - the give and take - the spontaneity, the lack of commitment - and most of all the 'send button.' I love the send button. It is my best friend.

Yes, I agree. Now I want you to know - and this is the truth (as usual) - that no matter how many times I insult someone or hurt their feelings in a newsgroup it was never planned from the start. I simply tell the truth. Now sometimes as I'm telling it I can hear in it's tone a certain sarcasm or maybe even bitterness, something negative - but I do not back out of it. In other words, I do not intend to offend, but can sometimes tell that what I'm saying could offend - but if so, too bad. As long as it's not intentional it's ok. That's my philosophy.

"Your Honor, I'm telling you I didn't mean it. Yes yes, I fired the gun at him. But I only wanted to graze him. I just wanted him to feel the bullet's heat passing close - I did not want to hit him. The gun had to be defective. Can you cut me a break on this one?"

"Well", says the Judge, "I have owned some poorly made guns in my time, so I can identify with you on this one. Still, you should have aimed further off. You failed to take into account the possibility of failure. This is negligence. I cannot let it slide. One month in jail should teach you a lesson. And when you get out I advise you to buy a new gun."

Get this creep out of my courtroom!

Perry Mason is dead. You're going to need someone in his league, not easy to find these days. We have Hamilton Burger on our side, the greatest prosecutor who ever lived but was born at the wrong time and had to face Mason every day - no small chore. But he did it. Now he is ready to catch up. Win a bunch of cases. Starting with yours. Go ahead, file your stinking appeal - you are going down, convict!

If I were an attorney demanding an appeal for a client, even if the client is in jail on multiple murder charges, I would demand he be released during the appeal on the basis that his jailhouse status could have a negative influence on the jurors. "Your Honor, the jurors see my client coming through that back door, the one that connects to the holding cell, and they think, "There he is, there's the criminal." This is not fair. Sure, we dress him up in a suit and tie but the jurors know where he's spending his time - in a cell. For a fair trial I demand that my client be set free immediately. I will take responsibility for his actions up to at least a week before he is due to be sentenced. We never know how the defendant is going to act when it comes down to the wire. Even if we tell him not to worry, he's going to get off, he may not believe it. He is scared. But until then he is no threat to society."

There's a sign hanging in the sheriff's office in Tyler, Texas. It reads:

black man kills a White - murder
White man kills a black - justifiable homicide
black kills another black - one less nigger

Someone told me that they once heard Bozo say "I'm not a racist, I
just hate niggers". Please don't put me in that category. I think if I
had been around back in the days of slavery, I'd have been a good
master. My slaves would have loved me. Does that sound like a racist
to you? Bozo would have been one of those mean sons of bitches; hated
by all his slaves. Since Bozo and I are the only Jews here, your
statement that I'm the most racist after Bozo is technically true.

Why does it have to be Texas? That's kind of like a cheap laugh track or stupid silly music designed to let viewers know it's ok to laugh. Like now it's ok to laugh at the Nigger joke because it's happening in Texas, not in New York or some other 'cosmopolitan' area. Well, to me there is not much cosmopolitan about most of New York. The ones that have lived there a long time, very set in their ways. I call them concrete farmers.

Here's one for you that is actually an anti anti Negro joke. I liked it when I first heard it though.

The FBI sends wanted posted to every cop station in America. Four shots, two profiled, two from the front. Four shots in all. A few days later the FBI gets a call from the Sheriff in Tyler Texas. "Call off your manhunt", he tells them, "we got all four of them."

Judith? Ah, she's alright. Not as bad as Bozo. Still, they're both Jews and we have to be careful. Open, tolerant, generous, eager to teach, yearning to help - yet at all times vigilant. Remember, we are dealing with Jews here.

LOL, "Someone told me................." I always like statements that start out that way, like the whole world is sitting around talking about Bozo. "Yo, what's the latest on Bozo - any word?"

Actually, in the long run the mean slaves were kinder than the gentle ones. When you love your slaves it encourages slave recidivism. They keep coming back. The mean ones control them tough, yes. But when they run away they stay gone, they don't keep coming back. When you shower them with love as you say you would do you are enabling the slave trade. Please remember that.

I don't know WTF you're talking about. I only mentioned oxtail soup as a metaphor for something with hair still on it being cooked and burnt in rusty old cookware and smelling like meth and garlic the more it simmers.
