Really thought, a totally - one hundred percent blind, deaf, and dumb person from birth - how are they going to know what an alphabet is? It's beyond my grasp. I know there are such teachers as the one who helped Keller in the movie. The story was really about the teacher but Helen's blindness trumped everything to be point where she became the star. It is hard for me to grasp though. The temper tantrums the kid threw, that I can see as real - fingers probing your throat, rumblings in your ears, vibrations or whatever - like an invasion, nothing more. If these stories are true, and I'm not saying they're not - then I must say it is pretty amazing to take such a thing and teach it to communicate with words - to the point where Keller actually wrote speeches and so forth. Very hard to grasp.

Ok, you got me there. But now, calling it a miracle, I have even more reason to be suspicious. I believe the kid had one of her senses at least partially intact. I just find it hard to believe that a kid who never heard of the alphabet would sit still long enough to let someone to teach it to them using vibrations. Yes it was a miracle, and for that reason I don't believe it.

It is a cakewalk to not believe in stuff.

I am guessing she had the sense of touch, smell and taste. So those are pretty major. I think most creatures get by on those more than the others. Very basic, raw. Try a little experiment. Poke out your eyes, cut out your tongue, and pop your ear drums. Wait... no that is stupid. Do it to a friend.

This is the best time of my life to do some experimenting with less to lose.. Maybe I will try out your experiment. I'll video tape it and have it sent to you if I don't come out alive. Yes, the sense of smell and touch and taste (AND SMELL!), are very important - we know that. But an alphabet is such a learned thing. I will admit it's hard for me to imagine myself learning under the same conditions. I might learn some stuff, but I would probably do it using just touch, smell, taste, and smell - the combination of which as you say is more than enough to get by. But to be young and in that condition and have someone grabbing your hand and drawing stuff on it you've never seen, and rumbling word sounds into your ear - I don't know if I'd connect that to some kind of effort to teach me to communicate. I probably would have rebelled against it. Then people could say to me, 'I knew Helen Keller - and you Sir are no Helen Keller."

The doctors must hate working on those people. They cant tell you where it hurts. Just pointing and making gurgling sounds.

The doctors I've encountered would probably love it - a good excuse to take control. The ones I've encountered might ask what's wrong to start out your visit, but they don't really listen anyway. With a DDB patient (deaf, dumb, and blind), they have complete control. Plus they can charge extra when the DDB patient brings along an interpreter.

A good detective show with a DDB could be fun. He solves the crime but cant identify the perp.

To maintain the ever-burgeoning workforce in all fields including detective we are going to need more specialization like the medical field. Sure, in the past detectives had other guys doing stuff for him, but it was pretty much his show. In the future in all fields that will no longer be the case.. Too many workers creates the need for more jobs. This is where specialization comes in. A receptionist to take the calls (if there are any), a guy to answer the door, another guy to lead the customer to the detective's private office, then another guy to open the deceive's office door from the inside where a guy smoking a big cigar is seen with his feet propped up on the desk. The customer walks in. The guy behind the desk asks what his problem is. The customer tells the whole story. Finally the long wait is over. Then from the guy behind the desk, "Hold on a minute, I'll get the detective."

"I thought you were the detective", says the customer.

"Nah, I'm just the guy who takes down the information to look at." Then he knocks on a door and another workers takes the notes and hands them to the detective. He reads them fast and agrees to meet his new client. He enters the office using a cane, wearing sunglasses. He is deaf dumb and blind. The customer can't wait to finally tell his story to the right guy.

"First let me get a look at you", says the detective. "Gonna have to feel you out first."

He reaches out and grabs the client's face and molds his fingers over it, taking in the vibe, ingesting the scene. "You've got an honest face", the detective says. "Let's hear your story."

I still think a legless detective would be a big hit. Like the guy in "Freaks" who was able to scoot around really fast using just his arms. Low to the ground like a crab. But cross him just once, try to hurt him in any way, and he's all over you, grabbing you legs and clawing his way up your torso to your neck, his powerful hands encircling your neck to cut off your air supply.

I don't care how crippled up a person looks I do not take it for granted. I may even kick them in the balls as a precaution.

Unless what made them crippled also took away their balls. You need to practice kicking to other parts of the body just in case. A kick to the face is good. But it takes athletic ability. I can breathe, better than ever in fact, through two tiny holes surgically installed deep within my face cavity. Same with my eyes, deeply inserted. Anything that can be grabbed has been removed. I am ready to go. Sure, I'm a human being - I can be taken, I'm not perfect - but I'm about as close as you can get to a fighting machine. I can take anything because of these alterations to my body. I am not a fighter. I am alert and have great reflections, probably from flinching a lot as a kid. I am strong enough to hold off the average asshole. But I am not a fighter. However, if I were a fighter my advice to you would be to stop trying to give me advice and work instead on your own shortcomings, revealed a good deal of the time by your own words that come in the form of posts to this great group of ours. And yet instead of appreciating us - and especially me as the number one fan of the group - you come in all the time looking to argue. I won't have it. Do you hear me? I will simply not put up with it. Now, who is this person you'd like to see bust my ass? And secondly, why do you assume I under estimate anyone? I don't you know. I never underestimate any person, including even you. I want to live. I am aware that the burning desire for others to do the same can and will make them more dangerous than they may appear. I believe I can physically overtake and destroy any adversary on earth - if I am given the chance. Sure, my head is getting kicked in. The gutter is my friend. "Is that my blood?", I ask myself as a river of red gushes from somewhere in my head. Then looking deeper into the gutter I see something else. "Is that a gun?", I ask myself while staring at the potentially life saving device within arms reach. And they work. My arms work. I reach out. I snag the pistol. I point it at my attackers and begin to fire. Real bullets come out. My attackers die before my eyes. Was this fate? Did God intervene to save my life because he needs me for some higher purpose?

In my story I was not packing. The gun randomly appeared in the gutter - old, rusty, worn-out - how it got there no one knows - and I managed to reach for it. My arms worked. After the beating I had absorbed I was amazed I could move at all. But I was also grateful. I remember as they were kicking my face crying out, "Please kick something else!", but they didn't. I was pissed at the time. But now looking back on it, maybe if they had conceded to my wish and kicked me other places beyond my head they might have crippled my arms with kicks, making the gun grab impossible. So here is another lesson to always look on the bright side, to know that when something bad happens it could be you're entering the outskirts of something good. I do not pack a gun. I don't need one. I could regret not having one at some point. But I think if I had owned a gun all these years I would have used it on myself at some point. I don't mean suicide. I'm talking about getting drunk and dragging out the gun to play with it and making an irreversible mistake like blowing away just enough of my brain to turn me into a vegetable for life. As I result I learned to use my brain as my gun. I did carry a small club in the cab. I don't think I ever would have used it, but it made me feel a bit more secure. I was a steel rod covered in leather with a spring in the middle that gave it some oomph. 15 ounces. Just a tap to someone's shin bone and it stops them short, guaranteed. I never used it. Never wanted to. I know a gun is superior to a club, but I went with the club because I couldn't picture ever beating myself to death with it.
