I will be taking the laptop. I will likely have wifi when I go to motels. I will be posting on the road Arlo Guthrie style. Meeting truckers buying candy for Okie kids, tipping waitresses, you know, doing the Joad on the road.

Going alone or toting others along? What if the car doesn't make it? What if you take wrong turn and wind up in the middle of something horrible going down you are not aware of. Keep your radio on at all times. Be careful. Keep those eyes open. Ears too. Stay alert. Keep that smartphone by your side to warn you of hurricanes, tornados, and other natural disasters, as well as the made variety. This is uncharted territory for you. You ever see the movie "Panic in the Year Zero"? Has Ray Milland and Frankie Avalon in it. About a family going on a camping trip when atomic war breaks out. I think it was pretty good. Well I saw that several times and I know how it could go down. Do not worry about me buddy boy. I know the score. I can play this game. Send me in coach.

I never cared for Milland when he was young, except for "The Lost Weekend." His later sci fi stuff was generally entertaining. I believe I saw the movie you're talking about. Funny title. Ahead of it's time. If it ever hits the small screen I will certainly check it out. But as things stand now the small screen keeps showing the same old movies over and over again, mostly from the 2000s, remakes of better stuff that came before. So I wait. And wait. And wait.

I am taking the movie back to theaters this summer. Big ad campaign. I got relatives of Milland to go on tour and Mr. Avalon has showed interest in the project. To promote it we will have the Army nuke LA. I know it is a large part of our target audience but in this case we are using them as a target. Ground Zero!

You mean you'll be using them as free extras. That's against union rules buddy. Mr. Avalon - funny, never thought of him that way. I was on stage with Avalon. Actually I was on stage doing my sax act when the Comedy Store owner Sammy Shore hopped up with his trumpet and started playing along. I could not play. The sax was a prop for my act. I could play a tune but it was bad, which is where the comedy came in, partly. So Shore jumps up there with me followed by his buddy Frankie Avalon who also played trumpet. I think they both thought I could actually play and was just pretending to play bad for my act. My act was pretty good. But it was an act and it got old quick to me and I was not creative or inspired enough to rise above it - and maybe I'm glad because who knows what kind of asshole I'd be today had things worked out differently.

Yes, the movie needs to be seen. But let's scrap the ad campaign. We don't need it. Instead let's lobby to have the film slated for mandatory viewing by students between ages 12 and 15 or whatever. Along with "Where's your vaccination card?", we get, "Where's your "Panic in the Year Zero" ticket stub? You don't have one? Joe! Take this clown down and book him, he's walking around without his "Panic" card."

I think it was the first survivalist movie. Post apocalyptic theme. How will they survive? What will happen to morality? Law and order? Yes it was deep for the time. But now we may be too shallow.

I'm going to look it up and pit it against a few others I remember from that era. Survivalist covers a lot of ground. Post apocalyptic might be better. I remember Milland in a survivalist type movie. I think it was the whole family in a station wagon. I'd like to see it again. Where can I rent it? Can I buy it? Who's selling? How much? Is there still time?

"Only 3 left and time is running out" - an apocalyptic panic-oriented ad for a movie of the same description. Make the buyer feel that just getting the film is itself an act of survival. Don't make them want it. Make them need it. But how? How do we make them need it? Will we have to use force? Are we cunning enough to establish our power without violence?

By the way - are you reading Judith - overtime I see the title of this thread I think you were the one who started it. Only today did I look at the first post and see it came from me. It was about my laundry. With you posting lots of fat stories lately - plus you said you weighed 500 pounds (I think) - I just naturally assumed it was a post about your body. Yes, I have seen it. But I would watch it again. Avalon was not considered an actor but he was as good as anything else they had to offer at that time and today as well. All hail Avalon!

I liked the original "The Hills Have Eyes." My best friend Charles saw it and said it was hilarious and I've got to see it. He looked it up in the papers. It was playing only in Huntington Park. A kind of creeped out gang vibe to the place that could have been all in my head (but I doubt it).

The movie started out slowly. About 10 or 15 minutes in I began to gripe about the lack of action - no laughs yet - when suddenly a big lunatic came crashing through the gas station wall and grabbed the attendant around the neck and choked him to death against the splintered wood. It was a hoot. A tribe of uneducated hill people using modern gadgets stolen from passing motorists along the way. Walkie talkies, all kinds of shit.

At one point one of the hill people was chasing the father whose car they had taken. They were on foot. The chaser was muttering, "Run daddy run, heart go boom boom", as he gained on him. The next scene cuts to a camp fire scene with the loonies eating. The main loony is gnawing away at a drumstick of something and muttering at the same time: "You come into our territory, you stick your finger in our pie - I will eat the heart of your stinking memory", as the camera cuts to a crisply burned Daddy on a huge vertical pole with steam coming out of his mouth. The guy is eating a piece of Daddy and talking to him at the same time. I loved it. It had it's down moments but overall I enjoyed it.

I googled "Eyes" looking for a clip of the "I'll eat the heart of your stinking memory" scene but all I got was a bunch of text. I waded through it and sure enough toward the end I managed to see it mentioned. So I copied and pasted it below. Nothing special, but funny how the long article about the movie delved into the analytical aspects of it, giving it some kind of social relevance, as if just watching lunacy for the fun of it isn't good enough.

"Yes, yes, I know what Peter said to Paul - but more importantly, "What did he mean by it? We need to analyze this. Was he referring to the Vietnam War? Social unrest? Poverty and greed? What did he mean? We've got to find out."
