In the mid to late 80s, I used to hang around Compuserve's Amiga forum.
One of the sysops (a term used to describe something like a moderator on
a forum), was John Draper, AKA "Cap'n Crunch". He had previously served
two prison terms for telephone fraud, having discovered that a whistle
in boxes of Cap'n Crunch cereal produced a 2600 Hz tone, which was used
extensively in those days for 'phone phreaking'.

Steve Ahlstrom (the head sysop) contacted me one day and told me John
Draper was no longer a sysop, and asked if I would like to take his
place. I said yes.

Turns out that John had been charged, along with a few others, with
forging BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) tickets, and Stsve asked him to
leave the forum.

In any case, I have a confession to make - one of several, but I may
save the rest for Boxing Day. I didn't look at the NYT article, but
concluded from the URL that there were quotation marks where there were
none.

That doesn't rule out the idea of punning, but it removes one of its props.

Agreed; but redeemed by her performance.

I am surprised (but not much) that PTD was unfamiliar with the "hack"
meaning of taxicab. As recently as June, 2020 that NYC used the term
in a government document:

https://www1.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/central-park-south-grand-army-pl-cb5-jun2020.pdf

I assume he would know that a "hackstand" is not a place where
computer hackers congregate.

You are probably also surprised to learn that the document that
permits someone to drive a cab is officially called a "hack license."

No New Yorker can not-know that.

Especially since they are in the news from time to time.

As an undergraduate I lived in a university college where a number of
phones were scattered about the college buildings. Although technically
public phones, they were used for both incoming and outgoing calls.

Once, a technician was replacing one of the phones. A group of students
was watching him. As he finished the job, he said to them "Now you won't
be able to make free calls."

He shouldn't have issued that challenge. It took twenty minutes.

I and a few friends from a computer club went to see /War Games/, and
one fellow, fairly young, was marvelling at the nifty technology. Some
of us kept telling which which things were not possible with the
equipment the kid in the film was using. I don't think he was convinced.

In one scene, the boy stepped into a phone booth, pulled out a hairpin
(or possibly just a wire), and shorted the microphone to the metal body
of the phone.

The young guy with us called bullshit, and the rest of us looked at him
and told him that was exactly how to make a free call.

After we left the theatre, we stopped at a phone booth and showed him.

I imagine that was a high-tech solution.

Around 1960, there was an Argentine coin (50 centavos, I think), worth
very little, that Canadian payphones took for quarters. Very useful for
calling home.
