However, being able to trace which loon the idiot listened to is so impractical
that this is not a useful strategy of deterrence.

Of course we are all responsible for our decisions. But the fact that we have
to put locks on our doors, or doubt what other people say, is because of evil
thieves and liars, it's not because of honest people. Honest people *deserve*
to live in a world where everyone else is honest too.

So making the people who are dishonest pay for *all* the costs of the *existence*
of dishonesty as a possibility is perfectly fair and just.
