retrobbs was down for I don't know how long. I was gone for work for about 13 hours. It's back up now.

I plan to mirror the nntp server and retrobbs in two different locations eventually as best I can.

Also, I may have just found a way to carry usenet and DoveNet.

I just created alt.test and test on the nntp server. alt.test is usenet and test is Freenet. So far so good, but I need to wait and see that posts come in properly. Also, that posting here propagates properly.

Feel free to test if you like. I'm not testing on DoveNet as there is no test forum. Once I can get usenet running on the nntp server, not just retrobbs, I'll carry over what I learn to set up DoveNet.

I was doing a lot of testing when you sent this. I may have been interrupting Synchronet while it was syncing with the nntp server. I hope that's all it is.

Note: If you post to Freenet, it will take days the first time for it to become visible on FMS. This is by design (FMS design), it is an anti-spam mechanism.

After that, the more you post, the faster they show up. I find that my FMS posts show up within an hour or so. If you are familiar with Freenet, you realize that's pretty fast.

pasting the message:

I just came home from work to find the computer running retrobbs and rocksolid locked up (so, not so rocksolid).

All the more reason to run multiple, remote nntp servers.

One computer alone running anything, will never live up to that name. A distributed system of computers all running the same stuff together now, thats something else: that can really be rocksolid.

You should be able to set up inn2, and have it sync with mine here, then you only need to connect to your own nntp server, not multiple servers for the same group.

I will give that a shot. With this setup, I can also do maintenance on the nntp part without taking the web frontend (the forum) offline.
Maybe I will also try SRND, which is the nntp server used by most overchan nodes (according to github).

And for others who would like to run a node, we can simply say that the whole service runs on nntp (simpler than if we have to mix different ways of updating).

I do plan to run a separate remote inn2 instance also, but not right away. I want to get feeding the server working locally first. It's not something I've done before and the logging is lacking, so it's hard to identify what I'm doing wrong.

You mean remote like on some rented server ? That would make things even more stable.
Which program is not logging ? Inn2 or synchronet ?

its strange that this one was not updated. maybe it is due to the fact that I edited it after posting (I can disable that in the forum settings).

Exactly. It's nntp, not whatever forum software they happen to see.

I haven't looked at overchan yet (only as a user in the past) and didn't realize they're using nntp. Interesting.

Yes, I already run stuff on rented servers, so it' no issue to run something else.
