Since def4.i2p is coming along awesomely, I thought I'd go ahead and steal ideas. Why be creative when you can just appropriate good ideas?

What that all means is that def4.i2p is cool, and I want to still hang out with the cool kids, so I modified Rocksolid Light a bit.

Let me know what you think? (or if I broke it, lol)

rslight threads posts when the group is selected. It then caches those results for a while, then the cache expires (else a lot of repeating the same tasks)

So when new posts show up, they should be threaded in pretty quickly, but it's possible that the cache hasn't expired yet.

Finally have all 4 rslight section and all 4 retrobbs section using exactly the same code. Have any differences just moved to the config files now.

Makes it much easier to add thing, or change things.

I can see that rslight does the threading strictly by reference (message-id).
On def4 I use a mix between message_id and posting time (so a post refering to an earlier post in the thread will be displayed after another one, if it been posted later).

thanks for the link. seems like this guy has put in a lot of thought.
this i found a bit depressing:
My C version of this code was able to thread 10,000 messages
in less than half a second on a low-end (90 MHz) Pentium, so
the argument that it has to be in the database for efficiency
is pure bunk.
part of is most likely that this code is compiled, in contrast to shell code. but i only do 30% of the work with my approach to threading, and take ca 10.000 times as long. seems like i have a lot of potential for optimization (which i kind of guessed already, but to see these figures...oh my).

That was not my meaning. If there is answer to the first post with a thread following, and then there is another answer to the
first post, you can deal with it in different ways: -you can display by thread structure (like rslight does now) or
-you can display by time of posting (or reception), which is what def4 is doing now

The second one actually breaks real threading, but i found it more fit for this site.

lol, the guy suggested a solution to the problem of generating globally unique message ids:

and i did 95% of that when i wrote the code for the posting routine of def4 (without knowing this, of course, or any other sources about it, just wrote what i thought would be good and working). the only thing i added is that i hash the id obtained in the end to make it even less predictable (thought that might be a good idea as well). but the rest is pretty much the same...

I see that you have changed code again, so now the threads are not displayed on opening of the group anymore. did you intend to reduce cpu load or something ?

And one suggestion: what do you think about preloading the field "Username" with "AnonUser" ? would just save some typing.
Or do you want to encourage posting with account ?

I thought that it should be one or the other. A thread tree, or the articles themselves. It allows more thread titles to be displayed at one time, instead of a bunch of the same thread taking up the whole screen.


And one suggestion: what do you think about preloading the field "Username" with "AnonUser" ? would just save some typing.
Or do you want to encourage posting with account ?

Lol, I was just thinking about that while at work today (instead of thinking about work). I may do that.

I do like posts with a username when I'm in a forum, but I understand that many would rather not use one, and that's fine.

I find that when I use a forum for a while, I tend to understand what a poster means much more easily when I know who (what username) is posting. Sorta like irl. But anonymous is fine too, it's just my preference.

that i understand well. people grow on you with time, even if there only identity towards you is a handle on a webforum.

lately i more and more appreciate anonymous posting though, as it has kind of the reverse effect: it separates completely the posted content from any reference to a person. in this way, the content is highlighted and put in the enter of attention.

but as you say, it is just a matter of personal taste and preference. and there is space for both.
