It is a federated and fully open specification alternative to the popular gaming/multimedia chat application Discord. Old timers would probably prefer text-only IRC, but IRC is starting to be (slowly) replaced by Matrix in the FOSS community.

Mozilla has not yet decided, but they have already deprecated irc.mozilla.org. I am curious to find out what chat application/server they will decide on, as their decision will undoubtedly shape the FOSS landscape.

They will decide between Mattermost, Matrix, Rocket.Chat and Slack.

Unfortunately, Matrix currently has no I2P or Tor support and the current reference implementation for the server is not very optimized and slow, so you can't run it on a micro VPS like you could with IRC or E-Mail servers.

it looks very nice, thought through, well documented and everything. easy enough to integrate into other software, it seems.
from the basic idea, i understand that it is practically the same as usenet, overchan, syndie, aktie, fediverse or also these forums here: federation is the key.
according to https://matrix.org/docs/spec/ the communication between the servers runs on https, which makes it perfectly compatible with tor and i2p, just proxying should be enough.

could be really interesting....

There are alternative clients that can be used, but the web/electron one (Riot) is the most feature complete right now.

the riot app did not work for me using tbb, even with js enabled. i would probably prefer weechat https://matrix.org/docs/projects/client/weechat-matrix/
it seems that the devs have put in a lot of work to make this bridgeable to other services: https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-appservice-bridge/blob/master/HOWTO.md

i see a future for this.
