Don't worry, this will not be another thread like "what is the best language". Instead, I would like to know from you which languages you use for your projects, and what was the reason/context you learned them in the first place. I will make a start and list the languages I have used so far (in timely order from past to today):

-basic on an apple II E: used for some small fun projects (little more than "hello world", to be honest)
-dos batch files (*.bat), to make some automation scripts under Windows 98
-assembler, to make some cracks, also for Windows
-VBA for Excel, to automatize some workflows for my employer
-python, to hack a bit in existing python projects
-bash scripts under linux, to make installation and maintenance easier
-php, to make some webpages and write wordpress plugins
-C#, to develop some desktop apps on Windows 10

Have no clue about java, javascript, ruby, go (just to name some); would be nice to hear what are the specific advantages/limitations for each.

I started out with BASIC like lots of people way back then. I bought a trs-80 model 4 for only a ton of money :)

I learned to write batch scripts and then started eventually using OS/2 and rexx.

First real programming on a job was C. There were no programmers there, or anyone who knew anything about programming, so I learned on my own and developed controllers for large industrial machines (robotics basically). I did need to use some assembler for speed and learned a bit, but now I have no idea how to write in assembly language.

Been out of the industry for a long time but still a hobbyist, and like PHP probably because of how closely it resembles C, which I already understand. So for now I'm a lame self taught PHP programmer. But stuff works so...

I'm currently enjoying writing programs in Forth. Mainly just small programs for now that automate parts of my job.

I think I like Forth because you are extending the language and creating a new language in the process. It has the expressiveness of Lisp while being a lot closer to the hardware and really simple to implement and use. It is both high level and low level at the same time. Control structures such as if/while/repeat aren't part of a special syntax of the language, they're just Forth words (word = function) that are executed at compile time of another word.
