There are possibly two reasons for this.

The US does not have maps of the oceans and their depth or
Someone messed up mightily. If it is No 2 I expect that person will be hung, drawn and quartered and the pieces will be fed to the sharks. Assuming they can find some sharks.

US submarine captain doesn't know where they were when they were
enjoying their food and beer inside there. The sub captain will be asked
to get hanged as the sub costs billions of dollars to build.
