Was General Douglas MacArthur right that we should have annihilated China when we had the chance?
The US didn't have enough atomic bombs to annihilate China - at best, they could have devastated one or two major cities, but they'd still need a massive ground force to push into China.

The big problem, however, is that using up the very limited atomic stockpile on China would mean that the USSR could roll over a weakened Europe in a matter of weeks. The US would then have a land war in China and a USSR dominating Europe, with no more trump cards.

Trading Europe for a new war in China was a bad deal and Truman knew it.
