If the United States recognized Taiwan as independent, China would be very angry and the Chinese government would probably prepare to invade Taiwan.

If China recognized Hawaii as independent, life in Hawaii would go as usual, comedians the world over would make jokes about it, and governments would be checking intelligence reports to look for signs of dementia in President Xi.

In general, the world is not a video game and you don’t get to assume every comparison you make is equal because they appear to follow a rule you looked up.
