In one of today's on-line quick cryptics, I found this:

Took a picture that includes an animal (5)

The answer is the hidden word OKAPI, but I originally put in SHO(A)T. Are there other classic examples of one clue leading to two quite different words?

Just a thought,
Duke

The clue is: Took a picture that includes *an* animal. SHOAT requires: Took a picture that includes *a* animal. You could fix the surface with, say, "... a young animal" but, as it stands, the clue doesn't lead to SHOAT. Or am I missing something?

But inclusion can be of an element the clue is defining, and "an" is a good enough definition for "a" I'd say.

I'd also say "one clue, two answers" would make a pretty tough WG challenge.

And speaking of tough, here's a clue from a recent Harper's that I struggled with for a long time, but in the end I think it's fair. See how you do...

The onset of Ethel Merman's first musical sound (7)

Cheers,
Mark

A young pig, especially one whihc is newly weaned

or

A Sheep-goat hybrid

So we've now got three animals!
