How about the origins of gambling? Did gambling start with one guy trying to take advantage of another, betting food and services instead of money which had not yet been invented? Or did it start as a means of getting to the truth, a way of proving themselves right?

He does this to shut up his opponent but also to prove himself correct and to “teach the guy a lesson.” But the guy doesn’t learn the lesson, does he? No, he loses the bet and is instantly filled with resentment, thinking only of revenge. As a result of such squabbles, gambling got a bad name over time. People have died from gambling induced conflict. But is it really such a bad thing? I’ll bet it’s not. I do believe gambling can breed hostility and resentment and vengeance.. But maybe in the long haul such small-town scuffles in some way helps to stave off world war Z. So let's try to look at the positive side of all things. You betcha.

I agree on the high stakes aspect of world conflict. But by having more smaller feud-type conflicts all over the world, small enough to not involve everyone, we can avoid another world war until we as one agree it's the only way out, the only answer to our burgeoning problems. I am not a gambler. In some ways I was. Like driving the cab, I took a lot of rides lots of other guys would never have taken. I was drawn to the risk of it. But it was not a big risk. If things got bad I could always duck out. I had the wheel and the gas pedal and the brakes. Anyway, I took a lot of gambles driving the cab, and I'm proud of it. Most cabbies I know love to boast about not taking any shit from anybody, and I understand where they're coming from. My boast is that I did take a lot of shit from people and am a proud and better man because of it.
