I have taken the 'roids maybe 3 times and would not want to make a habit of it. Some people take them all the time. The first time was in my 30s when I was having in and out of emergency rooms not being able to get air. I didn't know what I had. Finally one doctor at one of the emergency rooms told me, "Look, next time you get this, go here", handing me a small piece of paper with the address for the "Olive View Medical Facility" in the valley - way out there, a 3 bus transfer. They gave me the usual atomizer treatment - albuterol I think they call it, a broncho dilator. It always worked.. But then I'd go home and I'd start gasping for air again.

That very night it happened. I had enough money to take a cab, over $30 back then. It was a federal place. Welfare, whatever - funded by the state or feds, whatever. They gave me a bed for the night and set me up for a bunch of tests the following day. I was choking and coughing the whole way through. I know the machines were not needed, they were basically just cash registers for the facility, but if it was something I had to go through to get better then so be it. They concluded that I had asthma. They even gave me an allergy test. It was an all day affair. They prescribed me Theophylene to be taken every day along with a ten day supply of steroids to get me started. They said it might take a few days for them to kick in. I felt them going to work within hours. Everything opened up - all the tubes in the throat and nose and bronchial tubes. They were small white pills. They told me to take 10 pills the first and second day, then 8 pills the third and fourth day, and so on till they were gone. They do that because steroids should not be started and stopped on a dime. They take over natural functions of the body. To take them a good while and then suddenly stop could cause big trouble. But they sure as hell worked for me. Not just then but years later with that virus type mystery thing none of the doctors knew anything about (because they hadn't gone over it in school, I guess).

I read years ago that doctors got in the habit (supposedly) of prescribing antibiotics was to make the patient feel better that something is being done, even if it isn't. It's like going to a faith healer in a way. But who knows, maybe for you they will work.
