Seems Mr. Google has conflicting information on who really did.

In 1931, a California Pig Stand franchise introduced a drive-through
service that bypassed the carhops. The first identified drive through
restaurant was established in 1947 at Red's Giant Hamburg located in
Springfield, Missouri.

In-N-Out is credited as the first chain to have a two-way speaker system
for drive-thru orders. Founder Harry Snyder invented the system from his
garage in 1948. The innovation meant customers didn't have to leave
their cars or speak to an employee face-to-face.

Wendy's introduced the first modern drive through to the world; what
Dave Thomas coined the “Pick-Up Window”. This innovation was so
revolutionary that customers needed instructions on how to talk through
the speaker to place an order.

What a devolution from the days of carhops. By coincidence I watched
'American Graffiti' last week. Poking around later I found one site
claiming when they tried to auction the cars after the movie was done the
only one to move was the '58 Impala that went for a few hundred.

I'd have though they would bring a decent price but it seems vintage
cars are not the hobby they were for us.

Most Friday and Saturday nights we'd go to a place with car hops for
burgers. One night in 1962 we met a few girls there too. Married one
of them in 1966.

Don't forget 'after the movie was done' was 1973 iirc. I can see people
taking a pass on the Edsel and the Citroen 2CV.

https://www.hagerty.com/media/archived/american-graffiti-deuce-coupe/

According to that site the Deuce coupe and '55 Chevy were sold too.

It is a fickle hobby. I was at an auction in Indianapolis in the '80s when
a beautifully restored '61 Corvair was wheeled out. The bidding didn't
even hit the reserve. The auctioneer finally told the owner that he could
withdraw the car but the bids reflected what he could expect. Fat fenders
were in that year.

James Dean more or less grew up in Fairmount IN so they have an annual
Dean Festival. Bathtub Mercs come out of the woodwork. I salivated.

You simply live in the wrong place.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g44866890/2023-woodward-dream-cruise-coolest-cars/

Bear in mind that cars which were new when you were young are now
classics. And that "coolest cars" is one guy's opinion.

You might be able to find some better stuff if you search for video.

Even our language has become a puzzlement to the generations that
followed those of us who were born in the mid-40s and remember the
earliest days of TV availability. I've been asked why do we say "dial"
a number? Why do I say "the phone is "ringing"? or"type" a letter?
etc. I'm well aware of movie stars and big bands from the 30s and 40s,
but these days, most youngsters knowledge base rarely includes popular
culture icons prior to their own birth dates (with rare exceptions, e.g.
the Beatles. They likely never heard of or saw or handled a slide rule
and possibly not even a stand-alone pocket calculator or a transistor
radio. Naturally, the opposite is also true. I often have no idea what
and/or who they're talking about!

Youngsters won't watch anything in black and white.

I was recently surprised to learn that Captain Kangaroo's outfit was
red, since I watched him exclusively on a black-and-white television.
I thought it was blue.

It made no nevermind to me how old a movie was. I remember how
thrilling Fritz Lang's "M" was when I saw it at about 1 am on TV.
This was 40-45 years after its release. Of course, "The Terminator"
is 40 years old now.

Even they're not a sure thing. In the 1980s, I knew a teacher who
had a student say, "You mean Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?"

My wife taught film criticism at a prestigious university for 14 years.
She frequently came home shaking her head at the prejudices and
ignorance of many of her students when it came to knowing about or
willingness to learn about films made before they were teenagers. (She
often wondered why they took her course, which was an elective, if they
expressed disinterest in learning about the subject.) "Alfred
Hitchcock, never heard of him. Which movie was he in?" etc. etc.

I believe that our home environment as a child has a lot to do with what
we know and what is of interest to us. At least that's my situation.
My parents were smart enough to encourage and nurture my natural
curiosity. One of my earliest gifts when I was about 8 was a
phonograph. The row house they bought in Queens County, NYC was
exceedingly modest and came with a beat up old upright piano in the
unfinished basement. My mother had taken extensive piano lessons as a
child. My parents had very little money to spare but had the piano
refurbished and when I expressed pleasure at hearing my mother play, I
was offered lessons. I ended up taking lessons for almost a decade.
For gifts, I received records of classical piano music to play on my
phonograph. I enjoyed it. Then when Lenny Bernstein announced the
Young People's Concerts at Carnegie Hall, they really couldn't afford it
but got tickets for me to attend every single one of them. And so the
love and appreciation of classical music grew. I developed a life-long
knowledge and love of classical music that far exceeds that of either of
my parents. It's only a hobby of mine, but my favorite hobby. Just one
example.

Sounds like you had great parents. We had a piano and my mother and
sister played, I had no real interest and I don't think the talent for
it either. Tried a bit many years later.

Always had music in the house. Still do. Music and associated memories.
Whenever I hear Ebb Tide I'm transported back to my 1950s home. The
78 RPM phonograph was in the dining room. Many other association with
people and places.

I go to sleep listening to music every night and music is playing now.

I had a black '62 Lincoln. The curb weight was around 5400 pounds
propelled by a 430 ci engine. It got about 20 mpg on the highway
comparable to some of the current SUVs.

There are several car shows here during the summer. It is a shock to see
some of the stuff I drove in the '60s and '70s that were nothing special
show up as classics.

Speaking of classics I watched the new Fallout series. I wonder how many
viewers identified the Kaiser Darrin and Messerschmitt. I'd like to have a
Messerschmitt but not 50 grand worth.

There were others I could identify that were rusted out hulks. Amazon must
have raided every junkyard in 5 states to get their collection.

Never saw one of those in person, but they sure stand out.

I do remember Kaiser sedans though. And Hudson, Henry J, etc.

I have seen Kaisers, Frazers, and Henry Js on the wild. The J is the one
that stood out with that weird little tail light bump like it was modestly
emulating a '51 Caddy. I can't recall if I've ever seen a Kaiser-Darrin
or if its weirdness was imprinted on my mind.

I think the Antique Car Museum in Iowa had a Messerschmitt. A friend who
spent his early years in Germany considered it a suicide machine. Even in
the '50s it was the slowest thing on the road and in danger of getting run
over. The new version sounds like it can provide the same thrills.

https://driving.ca/auto-news/news/the-messerschmitt-bubble-car-rides-again

The Hudson Hornets were the hot stock car in their era. There is a
building labeled 'Charlie's Hudsons' on my way to town. It has a glass
front and several Hudson's on display, but it never was a museum. Charlie
died a few years ago and I regret I never stopped to get his story.
