Brett Favre (historic essay)

Green Bay was heavily favored going into the Monday night game, but after quarterback Brett Favre’s father died, the oddsmakers lowered the spread thinking his father’s death might negatively influence his play at the position.

I believe the point spread for that game should have gone higher for Favre’s team because of the death of his father.

The sports announcers talked about the mighty sacrifice of Brett playing the game during a time of grief. The reality is that playing any game under conditions of grief is the best thing a person can do to get rid of it.

I was 13 years old when my father died. It crushed me. It crushed me as much or more than Favre was crushed when his father died. I went out bowling the night my father died - to get away from the grief - and I wound up bowling the best game of my young life.  From my own experience I knew Favre would have a great night because the game would allow him to escape the pressure of real-life grief. He was able to play without pressure.

I have long believed the brain can handle pressure from only one source at a time.  The pressure of his father's death allowed him to play a pressure-free game.  I am only kidding when I say the point spread should have been higher. But I am not kidding about the rest. The spread should not have been lowered.  Has anyone other than myself ever noticed this?  Have you ever been really tired or bothered by a stomach ache or some other condition that clouds your brain, only to find that under such conditions you performed better than usual?  If you think about it you might recognize that at some point you have done so.  Anyway, it really bugged me when the announcers went on and on about the big sacrifice Favre was making by playing in grief, when in reality it was not a sacrifice, it was a gift.  It was something Favre needed. It was also a healthy thing to do. It would be healthier for all if they’d admit I’m right. Being honest is a healthy thing. There will be plenty of time for grief when the game is over........... so get your ass out on the field and laugh it up while you can , assholes.

I had a bundle on that game. I knew his pa was sick. So I just moved things up a little.

Good move. I am serious though, I have seen it before, competitive sportsmen doing well after some kind of tragedy in their lives. I don't care, I just can't stand when no one ever mentions it. Not just that, any subject in which I think of something and no one with a voice echoes it. For example, when the news assholes talk about soldiers coming back with PTSD, not once have I heard one mention the possibility that most volunteers had mental problems even before they joined the military. I just hate when I think of something and not not one person with a public voice says the same thing, which only serves to further prove that my theories are correct.

"Yes Your Honor, I killed his father because I had money on the game and I knew from past experience that sports people play better after someone close to them dies."

Did George Floyd have a kid who was going to play the big game? Maybe Office Chauvin had a bet on it. This would then be a justified killing. We must have a retrial! Sports Matters!

I think Floyd had a kid. One kid. Now the kid is going to grow up a millionaire. I don't think it's a good thing to give a lot of money to kids. I am not sure the kid knew Floyd as his father. But I can guarantee you had Floyd lived his son would have grown up to hate his guts. The cop should have used the defense that if he didn't kill Floyd somebody else would have, maybe in a worse way. Floyd was heading toward the dark cloud, no doubt about it. How many people really knew the guy? Incredible. Reminds me of everyone crying on the streets when JFK died. Same with Presley. I know now these people get hysterical over the deaths of famous people they don't even know because deep down they know they don't have anyone close to them worth crying over. It's not just Floyd. It's not just Blacks. It's these fucking parents who cry, "What did they do to our baby?", when they haven't seen 'the baby' in a year and have no idea where he is or what he's up to.. I don't know how old Floyd's kid is but I can see him running for President one day on the "I Can't Breathe" ticket.

It's these fucking parents who cry, "What did they do to our baby?", when they haven't seen 'the baby' in a year and have no idea where he is or what he's up to. I don't know how old Floyd's kid is but I can see him running for President one day on the "I Can't Breathe" ticket.

Pathetic. Well I am use to pathetic. Pathetic strong. Get ready more on the way. I have a story about Presley dying. I was dating a girl who was a big Elvis fan. The day I called her to tell her I had joined the Navy she was crying. I said why the tears thinking it must be my going away. She said "Elvis has died". It was August 77. A day in infamy.

I remember lots of stuff on the basis of The King's death. I remember it was 1977. I quit smoking that year at age 29 after putting down 3 packs a day for 17 years. I got Violent World Magazine every month of the spring and summer till it went belly up. All this happened and I remember that as the year because it was the year of "The Death of the King." Pretty funny scene in a movie right there, the guy heading off for the military thinking his girlfriend is crying to see him go when she's crying over the guy who died on the toilet. Funny one.

His death meant nothing to me. I like him ok but not a fan. She was also a Ricky Nelson fan and he died in an airplane crash a few years later which made me smile.

I moved furniture from Ricky Nelson's Studio City office to his mother's place down the coast a ways. It was a really small and easy job. I met Nelson and his wife. He was really skinny and so was she. Dopers for sure, although at the time I didn't think much of it. I too was not a big Presley fan although I did like his earlier stuff from the 50s with the Jordanairres backup group. Some guys get better with age, some reach their peak early.. Presley reached his peak early which means to me he was already dead when he died, so it was the same for me as you, not that big a deal - although it's always a kick to see a whole bunch of people crying over someone they never met. I like that, always have. Funny - Nelson dies and the first thing you do is zero in on an image of your ex girlfriend for a glimpse of her grief, reveling in the moment, digging not only on Rickie's exit but on your ex's momentary despair. Always good when the death is personal even in some small way...................

Forgot to mention about the Nelson moving job. When we moved the stuff to the beach it was to his mother Harriet's place. A nice place. She asked us if we wanted something to drink. I'm not much of a star struck guy. But it was odd meeting Harriet alone - Ozzie was already dead - because being there alone and offering us something to drink she really reminded me immediately of her character on the old Ricky Nelson show - the perfect mother or whatever. Well, as it turns out, no so perfect as her drug addled son and his equally numbed out spouse lost control of that small aircraft and plunged into the deep blue sea with "Ebb Tide" booming over their radio as they went down, their skinny bodies hitting the water and ballooning up triple normal size on contact only to then disintegrate like a jig saw puzzle thrown against the wall.

You sure that wasn't Jackie O and JFK Jr?

> You sure that wasn't Jackie O and JFK Jr?

I had my fair share of encounters with known people in Hollywood. Some of it was work related, with the cab or the pickup truck when I drove delivery for the liquor store. I had Jackie O and JFK Jr in the cab at the same time - before they died. I knew it was them. They were wearing sunglasses, trying to play it cool, incognito - but I know who they were. I worked the conversation to geography, talking about different parts of the country. They were impressed with my knowledge, I could tell. "You've travelled quite a bit", said Jackie O. "What's your favorite town - New York, Frisco, Chi Town?" I told her those towns were alright but could not compare to my all-time favorite - Dallas Texas. "What?" she boomed with JFK Jr chiming in, "This guy is insane, Mother."

"And what exactly is it about Dallas Texas that you find so enchanting?", asked the lovely Mz O.

"Oh, just memories", I said.

"Memories of living there - just visiting, what?"

"Neither", I said, "I've never been there, it's like a good story - as a town it's got legs."

"What do you mean, legs?", said JFK Jr.

"I mean I can talk about it all day because all kinds of interesting and entertaining stuff happened there like that time when Lee Harvey smashed Kennedy's head open and then Ruby gunned down Oswald on national TV. This didn't happen in New York or Chi Town or some other big cosmopolitan city - it happened in Dallas. And to this day nobody knows what really went down that day because what happens in Dallas stays in Dallas."

Later, the expression "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas became popular and is used to this day. But the expression started in Dallas.

"Watch out John John, the plane is going down fast, seems to be heading for that grassy knoll over there."

Wow what a piece of History this is. The future of America will be shaped by the kids who read this. JFK will never die he will always be clutching his throat in history.

If what you say is true I say blame it on the eternal flame. Let JFK rest in peace. Let him go. Release him. The eternal flame has kept him alive all these years, his corpse hard and still, numb to the world. But his soul trapped within, deep within his bones, kept within by the mighty eternal flame. Souls do not like extreme heat, flame, fire - that kind of stuff. This is known scientific fact. JFK's soul is afraid to come out. I guarantee you, snuff out that eternal flame and we will see his soul take flight to the heaven's, riding high on the wings of hope like his son John John when he went down in that plane into an ocean grave. He is dead and at peace waiting patiently for his father's arrival which can happen only if we snuff out that darned eternal flame.

> We make too much of death and too little of life.

That is only natural. Don't worry - it will reverse itself after we're dead. Below the surface of our earth a billion plus anxious corpses collectively yearn for life with their heavily concentrated subterranean wishes coming together as one united force with the earth heaving open with sod-covered corpses crawling out of their holes gaining strength with each new move till their crawl turns to a walk to a jog to a skip to a full out race to get back to where they belong - in love with life forever.

More people are alive now than ever lived. It is going to get crowded soon..

I always tended to feel that way but admit I was never sure. Interesting question, one I have asked many times through my life: Which are there more of - dead people who once lived or living people who will die? It's hard to believe more have died than are alive today. But I really don't know. I'm going to google it up. Now. Going to type in "Have more people died worldwide than are alive today?" Ok, got it. A pretty long explanation for every link so I edited out a bunch of stuff and went with the article I thought summed it up nicely. I like the way they got basic at the end, almost arrogant, superlative I guess you'd call it, reminds me of that scene with Walter White trying to diminish his role in the airplane crash by saying it was nothing compared to other notable crashes. The official verdict appears below in quotes. I like the way they present their case as if it could not possibly be challenged. I am not challenging it. I like the way they explained it.

///////////////////////////

"Population growth has mostly happened in the modern period when records were kept, so if estimates for the early period are slightly off, this will not drastically change the overall ratio of "ever lived" to "living".... So what are the figures? There are currently seven billion people alive today and the Population Reference Bureau estimates that about 107 billion people have ever lived.

This means that we are nowhere near close to having more alive than dead. In fact, there are 15 dead people for every person living. We surpassed seven billion dead way back between 8000 BC and AD 1."

//////////////////////////////

Uh oh, there are more dead than living. They are coming back. And they're mad as hell. Be careful. ............ Oh, adding this on now, sending this late because I got the 'over the limit' message with it earlier. Since then I watched Johnny Carson and Carlin was on. He was very contrived at times. I liked him when he got older. Anyway, funny, after writing the above earlier I saw Carlin on the show talking about the very same thing, all time number of dead people vs those alive today. He talked about souls coming back, said the numbers didn't match up. But see, here's another guy without imagination - never once thinking about the one big soul theory - I mean the one really big soul theory that involves all living things, even things not seen as living - not just human beings. If you take everything alive that ever died, let's face it, the world is a graveyard. And as I said before regarding reincarnation and so forth, how do we know that AIDS or COVID19 and a bunch of new shit aren't the souls of extinct creatures like dinosaurs and others latching on to anything new for another crack at life?

> But what about re-incarnation? You need to figure how many are retreads vs new issues.

There are no new issues. We're talking life here. It is abundant. It is never ending. All it wants to do - all it needs to do - and believe me need is the word - is eat, drink, and breathe. From the day we're born to the day we die that's all we were born to do. But somewhere along the way we evolved ever so slightly and found ourselves able to entertain ourselves in a variety of ways - laughter, the drama of conflict, and now TV and the computer which allow us to distract ourselves from the ever present burden of need into which we were born. But even before we were born we were needful. That's why we were born. That's why we keep coming back. It's all we know. We are born of hunger. There is no peace in death, only an incredible nightmarish need to breathe, eat, and drink no matter what form we come back as. I still say things that go extinct come back as what's trending now. I am serious when I say AIDS and the virus and other shit are the souls of extinct creatures coming back because they never left. There is no way out. You die but you don't leave. The need never ends because that's what we are - NEED.

If souls include insects and other animals moving in and out of humans then the bull pen for each new human is deep.

LOL. I'm saving that one, adding it to your file. "The bullpen for each new human is deep." LOL.

Now pitching for the Giants - uh oh, looks like a rookie, someone we've never seen before - some new kind of life form we've never seen before. Yes, our bullpen is deep. But deep with what? A bunch of losers? Has beens? Frightened rookies? And remember, once you're pulled from the game you can't get back in. Can we get out of this inning alive? Yes. But the innings are endless. This game is for all the marbles and it never ends.

One time I tried to give baseball a chance. I am watching a game on TV and left handed batter comes up. They stop the game to bring out a left handed pitcher. He is given a bunch of warm up pitches. Finally the game resumes. He manages to strike out the batter. Then he is relieved and another pitcher comes on and the warm up starts. Unreal.

If I had to chose from the top 3 team sports I would probably play baseball first. I also don't mind watching it. But not the big leagues. Too far away. Horrible seating. I do not follow the leagues. I am only into the NFL in that way, start to finish, probably because they all play only one game per week. I like the format of the NFL. So actually I like the game of baseball more than football, I suppose, but watching it is a bore, and doing it for a 162 game schedule is insane. Yes, the game has evolved in that way. It is rare these days for a pitcher to go the full nine innings. I don't care. Things change. I am not as big a sports fan as you might think. I don't automatically go from one to another based on what season it is. I do like a good boxing match now and then, also the MMA. But I was never an organized player of sports on any level. I don't like team play. I do now as a spectator. I like teams that play best as teams. But that's because they are the best at what they do and they should play that way. But as kid I wanted no part of being told what to do. I still don't like it. Of course.

Of course.

I been to a few big league games. Last time I went I got seats right behind the dugout. They were very good. I enjoyed it. But having far away seats is bad. Same with any sports except maybe hand grenade tossing.
