There were some good people that had some real skills and helped others.

Unfortunately none of the newsservers I subscribe to have retained much
past 2021 and I don't keep more than 45 days of articles on my local
machine. I suppose you could go back in the Google Groups archives and
find the monthly statistics I've posted over the years and add them all
up!

1979, I bought in 1983, and I got internet around 1993. That's why

Ed, do you remember the guy who wanted to build a 26x60 foot deck, attached to
his house, which would require 48-foot supporting posts because the land slopes
away from the house, and he was dismayed because the quote came in at $12,000
while he only wanted it to cost $1000? That was in June 2005 and it was a
classic. :)

Nope, if you look at the whole series going back more than a decade,
this group has died in the arse very spectacularly indeed, just like
every other usenet group has. Nothing to do with the Peeler who
only showed up in this particular group relatively recently.

But it took a big dive after Google Groups no longer allowed posting.
Those that used GG chose not to get a real newsreader and sign up for an
account, even though they are often free.

Yes, I have noticed this in other groups I frequent. My only answer is
they don't want to learn something new. Another possibility is they
cannot get past corporate firewalls using necessary ports to access the
newsserver.

Possibly. When I was working I read a bit of Usenet while I had
some process running that would last longer than I wanted to sit
there and stare at it, but I didn't want to turn to some other
task for five minutes and risk forgetting about the first task.

Possibly they don't care enough about Usenet to configure a client.
