An urgent health alert has been issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
as the United States witnesses a sharp increase in the incidence of invasive meningococcal disease.

According to CDC, meningococcal disease “refers to any illness caused by bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis.
These illnesses are often severe, can be deadly, and include infections of the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) and bloodstream.”

Transmission occurs through close contact, prompting urgent calls for individuals with symptoms to seek care promptly to improve outcomes with timely antibiotic treatment.

With 422 cases recorded last year, this figure marks the highest annual case count since 2014, FOX News reported.

In the latest update from the agency, 143 cases have been reported as of March 25, which is 62 more than were reported at the same time in the previous year.

The CDC has identified the predominant strain responsible for the outbreak as serogroup Y ST-1466,
which seems to disproportionately affect adults between the ages of 30 and 60, accounting for 65% of cases.

The point that should be drawn from the CDC information is that
150 people out of 333 million is in the noise. This is basically
a BOLO to physicians.

I'd be far more worried about the 43,000 gun deaths per year in
the USA, or the 37,000 drunk driving deaths, or the 112,000
overdose deaths, or the 50,000 COVID deaths.

I would start with my doctor. While she is a standard GP and not some sort
of alternative practitioner she has a health skepticism for all things
government.

The last Medicare twist and turn had her going. It used to be an annual
'wellness' exam but they split it into two parts. The first was a mental
acuity and overall psychological well being survey where she was not
supposed to actually run tests, even the basics like blood sugar. Six
months later was the scheduled appoint to do a physical health assessment,
presumably without asking if I knew what day it was.

I don't know what her stand on vaccination is. She asked if I had received
the shots and moved on with no comment or pep talk.
