Am I correct that there is no way to pay cash or charge at the time of
using for toll roads in the DelRay to Key Largo, or the Miami to Naples
portion of Florida?

Is it possible to avoid toll roads without spending a lot more time on
the road.

I'm visiting my brother in Hollywood, renting a car for the first time.
But 6 years ago I drove my own car and I remember being on toll roads,
or at least seeing the entrances to them, but I don't remember how I
paid or if I paid.

This is the deal Thrifty offer, 10 dollars a day. 70 dollars. That
doesn't seem like a very good deal.

Alert: All-electronic toll roads
.....
If you decline our all-inclusive PlatePass tolling product, you will be
responsible for paying all tolls with cash, your personal transponder
(where permitted, but I don't have one) compatible with the toll road,
or directly to the toll authority (where permitted. Is it permitted??).
If you do not opt into PlatePass and you fail to pay your tolls by an
alternative method, you will be assessed the cash/highest undiscounted
price for each electronic toll included plus a convenience fee of $15.00
($9.99 in Florida & Boston Area) per incurred toll – capped at $90 per
rental period unless you make some other arrangement to directly pay for
the electronic tolls you incur.

So at most $20 more than the 70 if I'd paid Thrifty in advance. But it
will only take 6 tolls to get to $90.

I borrowed my sister-in-law's car and drove from Hollywood to Coral
Gables, on Xways, but don't rmemeber having any tolls.

But one can buy a Sunpass Mini for only $5, and you have to deposit $10,
which I guess you never lose but never get back either.

I just have to find a store that sells them before I go on a toll road.

So they hint that there could be one, but don't actually name SunPass or
SunPass Mini. Or that the transponders some people have in the northeast
will also work. E-Z Pass, etc.

Actuallly 9 tolls because in Florda it's only $10 charge per toll. Also
there is the toll amount.

I think I saw signs and took the fork that had no tolls.

Florida's toll roads joined the EZ Pass network a few months
ago, so any one you pick up anywhere in the country will
work there.

Note this is a recent change, so you might see older notes
claiming you need a specific Florida one.

Maybe that's why they didn't mention it. I was looking at a Thrifty car
rental page and it had "deals", links to other pages, and one expired
Dec 31, another a month before that, and one in 2020!!, Yes 2020. It's
too hard to update all the expired webpages.

Thanks. I occasionally use a toll road or bridge covered by EZ-pass,
once or twice a year**, but since I'm in my own car, not a rental, they
find out my address and send me a bill. There is no way to pay when
you're there. The last time, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, for fear I'd
forget later on, I tried to pay the fee after I got iirc an email but
before I got the bill. Even though I had the citation number and my
license plate, I had to wait 6 or 8 weeks until the bill came in the
mail.

So i suppose if I get a SunPass Mini, it will be nice that I'll be able
to use it even in my own car on those rare oocasions, the Bay Bridge to
the eastern shore of Md., the Delaware Memorial Bridge (in case anyone
would forget that there is Delaware)

Bring your EZ pass. No need to stick it, just lay it on the dash.

You never use the tunnel? Never go to DC? I live 1000 miles away and
pay tolls around Baltimore a couple of times a year.

The EZ pass is more useful than the Sun pass so may be a good idea to
get one since it works just about everywhere.

I live about 180^ opposite the tunnel, so whether I want to go N or S,
it's never part of the route.

There are no tolls to go to DC. Once when traffic on I-95 was heavy I
took MD-200 to get to I-270, and that was a toll road for about 18
miles, and it might have saved some time but it took me miles out of the
way. I took it partly to see what it was like.

When I go to NY or NJ there are 2 highway tolls and two bridge toll2.
Bridge tolls are only in one direction. I'd get a discount with a
ez-pass and maybe with a SundPass.

Too late for tomorrow. I could have thought of this in advance, but
didn't untiil the rental acknowledgement email showed up and referred to
it. However, I called Publix supermarket closest to my brother and
they have SunPasses. Thrify says the maxiumum it charges is $90, so if
you are renting for a month, or 3, or 6, it could be a bargain.

SunPass is probably going to be phased out now that EZ-Pass has become
valid in most if not all of FL's toll roads. SunPass I believe, is only
usable in FL whereas EZ-Pass is usable in many states, especially in the
Eastern states. When you obtain an EZ-Pass, it's free although you need
to put a $25 deposit into your EZ-Pass account. Even if you don't use
it, there are no account maintenance fees. Just get an EZ-Pass, don't
mount it on your car's windshield. If you rent a car, make sure the car
is of the same class vehicle as your personal car and at the time of
rental, log on to your ez-pass account and add the rental car to your
ez-pass account. Remember when you return the rental car to take your
EZ-Pass with you and immediately contact EZ-Pass and remove the rental
car from your EZ-Pass account. Lots of info on the web, both on the MD
EZ-Pass web site and on other reputable sites. Oh, and there's a Drive
EZMD app in both the Apple App store and in the Google Play android app
store for whichever type of cell phone you have. Have a safe drive!
