Hi,

I organically garden using raised containers in the back yard and clean
practices in the front yard. I do your normal suspects in the back
yard like tomatoes and such.

Anyone know much on fig trees and cross pollenation factors? I can see
the charts but live experience is always better!

Going back many years, my wife's grandfather had one and it produced.
It was the only one so I guess it was self pollinating.

Read up on "fig wasps". I have had a fig tree for 20 years, and this
last summer was the first time I've gotten more than a few ripe figs. I
did notice several other fig trees nearby last year, most smaller than mine.

Sometimes, people who post such gardening questions -
will also reveal what part of this big old planet they live in.

Not many fig trees in Montana so I guess we can rule that out.

Figs are a little strange:

https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/85340/fig-pollination-incredible-and-
probably-results-you-eating-mummified-wasps

Think about the poor little fig wasp when you're chowing down on your Fig
Newtons.

Fresh figs are fantastic but they're so delicate they seldom make it to
supermarkets.

I used to see them once a year in the market. At best it was for a very
short time and you had better enjoy them in a couple of days.

On my tree, they ripened fairly regularly for quite a while last summer,
which was nice.

Gorbal warming has a ways to go although we did make it from Zone 5a to 5b
(-15F to -10) last year. The USDA might have to reconsider after that
spell of -20 this year. I had enough trouble keeping my aged butt warm let
alone a hothouse full of figs.

NOTHING could ever be as "fantastic" as your incredibly big mouth, gossip

"My family and I traveled cross country in '52, going out on the northern
route and returning mostly on Rt 66. We also traveled quite a bit as the
interstates were being built. It might have been slower but it was a lot
more interesting. Even now I prefer what William Least Heat-Moon called
the blue highways but it's difficult. Around here there are remnants of
the Mullan Road as frontage roads but I-90 was laid over most of it so
there is no continuous route. So far 93 hasn't been destroyed."

"Five Fresh Figs"

My grandparents had a fig tree, and AFAIK it was the only one around.
These were big figs and five of them was a lot.
