My first client had a lot of money and was a real doozy. So was the case. He gave me several photos of my target, the guy he wanted me to shadow - but L.A. is a big town and it's easy for scum to get lost. Pete and Joe showed me how to pay guys for information. "Believe me Tommy", Pete said, "Show them the green, they'll show you the scene." Both famed PIs showed me how to do it and even gave me the names of guys who know what's going down all over town. Lots of inside info, very hush hush.

It was my first job. I was upfront with my client. I told him I was new to the game. He said he didn't care, that he saw honesty in my face and that was good enough for him. Money was no object. Indredible, my very first gig and I'm getting 10 Gs up front. I couldn't believe it. I hit all the spots - Jonny No Legs down by the wharf - Jimmy the Jiver pouring drinks at the 3 Clowns Bar in N. Hollywood - Harry the Hat at the Main St. Poolhall downtown, so many characters, too many to mention - but they had the info and I couldnt believe how easy it was to get it out of these guys. Show them the green.

I knew right away this was the job for me. I located my client's target within a week. One week, $10 Gs - how can you beat that? Truth is, after paying off my informants I would up breaking even on the case. I told Pete and Joe about it and they laughed at me. They told me not to worry, in time I'll get the hang of it. "Just dont let them know how much money you got", Mannix advised - "If you want to get ahead you've got to play it dumb." Well, I must be a pretty good method actor because ever since I started playing dumb I haven't been able to get out of character.

Actually, I just watched a Peter Gunn episode where he paid big bucks to four different informants in a single night, one of whom was famed dwarf actor Billy Barty. Pete pays out big bucks for info but is always well dressed and lives high on the hog. I don't know how he does it. To be the best at anything is not easy - but with the help of Joe and Pete and Frank Cannon along with occasional input from Huggy Bear who knows everything going down on the streets, who knows, maybe one day I will be the best private eye in this town. L.A. is a big town. It's a tough town. But it is my town. If I can make it there I can make it anywhere.

I get MeTv and Kolchak is on every Sunday night. I watch it because I rarely turn the channel. But it is not one of my faves, not by a long shot. I think that show only lasted one year. I didn't like it much then and I still don't. But I watch it anyway at times just to you and others how open minded and flexible I can be. I never cared for the vampire/ghosts/witches/sword and sorcerer type crap, not even as a kid. I'll roll with the paranormal when it comes my way in real life, not on some stinking TV show - and not one second before.

"Can I get both?" I hate that shit. I had a dentist say that to me once. It was ugly. I had been going to the same guy for several years, cleanings, an occasional filling if they'd do it, but usually they'd just try to sell the crown. So I started shopping around. Went to some new guy some people in my cab told me was good. I was stupid for asking them. For asking anybody. Of course he's good - for them - because he hasn't had to do any real work on them yet. So I'm sitting there explaining to him why I chose him. I told him I'm not looking for deals, I just want him to know upfront I can't afford crowns. I even told him how much money I average per week. Then he says, "Well, it's like I tell my daughter, you can buy a Volkswagen or a BMW, take your pick", and I knew I had found another asshole and that I myself was an asshole for even conducting the search.
