The early news had a segment about this. People don't fly all the way to their booked destination if there is a stop over city where they really want to go.

Saw this at work years ago. Our company agents in US would not do this
but employees had their own travel agent do it.

I was on a trip from Philly to Cincinnati with a marketing manager and
her ticket was much cheaper then mine because she booked from NYC to
Cincinnati with Philly stop. Just threw away the NYC part of the trip
and got on in Philly.

We had people from Europe buy two round trip tickets to the US and throw
away one as they were only staying a couple of days and you saved a
bundle if round trip was a week.

On company trips to California I would book for a week rather then the 5
days the trip required and stay into the weekend. I would bill for the
extra days but the company still saved hundreds of dollars by me doing
that.

Yes, iirc sometimes it's cheaper if you're going to a less popular
place. They don't charge by the mile. I read about this years ago,
but they didn't have skiplagged.com then. I think even the term skiplag
didn't exist then. You can't check your luggage.
