Ah yes, once again the six public high schools in my primarily upper
middle class locale published and pictured their valedictorian and
salutatorian.

Of the 12, ten have Asian or Indian names and appearance ...while only
two have "Anglo/gringo" names-- and one of them is Asian.

So it's 11 for them and only the one pretty little blondie for us.

The end is nigh...

Young people only need to vote Democrat. In return for their vote,
they'll be rewarded with an endless supply of free stuff.

"Them" _are_ "us". They are just as American as you are. Maybe more,
if they don't spout racist trash.

On the other hand, hatred of immigrants goes back all the way in this
country, so I suppose I should expect no more of you.

The notion of "racism" is a liberal/emotional corrupted combination of
the psychological/sociological dimension known as Ethnocentrism--
meaning people (and animals) think their own
group/tribe/herd/flock/state, etc., is the best and they prefer to hang
out with them plus Prejudice-- meaning having a predisposed negative
opinion of folks from a particular group/race/religion/region/tribe, etc.

Sometimes prejudice is based on fact, sometimes on misinformation. Most
often, it's a combination of both and colored by emotion.

In the past, immigrants recognized the incredible opportunities they now
had here and sought to assimilate, internalize American culture and
integrate as fast as possible. Nowadays though, not so much. That's why
you have to press 1 for Spanish or see weird holidays pre-printed in
your Apple or Google calendar.

My great grandparents arrived from the old country and Americanized as
quickly as they could. They didn't expect Americans to address them in
their native language, provide signs and documents in that language or
create national holidays for them to match the ones they left behind.

As one consequence of how things have been going, American
exceptionalism is circling the drain...

Listen, I'd agree with you- but then we'd both be wrong.

All the Asians I know are educated people. I doubt they are like the
illegals that violate our borders to get here and lack in education.
They put high value on education and push their children to get educated.

Racism had nothing to do with his commends. Look up the following:
Tiger parenting

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_parenting

Tiger parents prioritize schoolwork above all
else and highly encourage their children to
participate in activities that are beneficial
increasing the child's acceptance to the elite
universities. Tiger parents constantly propel
their children towards their commitment towards
excellence. In a similar way, Chinese tiger
parents prioritize students' core academic
subjects such as math, science, and language
arts to ensure their children's superior
performance in their core academic subjects.

And he is correct. We are circling the drain.

This word salad is a creation of racists whow want to pretend racism
doesn't exist. And who don't want to admit that they have it.

And how quickly was that? And what about the 11 valedictorians and
salutatorians shown in the paper makes you think they and their parents
have Americanized as fast as your grandparents? It seems like they are
doing it as fast or faster.

Where were your grandparents from? (You're not using your real name so
that's not a clue.) How old were each of the 4 of them when they got
here?

Have you discussed your feelings on this with your grandparents?

>create national holidays for them to match the ones they left behind.

What national holiday has anyone suggested, let alone created, to match
one left behind?

>As one consequence of how things have been going, American

You have a sanitized view of t he past and a racist view of the future.

Yep. And we don't have to act like cavemen anymore. We can treat
outgroup like ingroup if we're properly socialized by our parents.

I call B.S. How many 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants had parents
and grandparents who lived in their own enclaves and spoke only their
native language?

Because we're no longer being dicks about it.

How old were they when they emigrated?

Only if one has a very, very narrow view of American exceptionalism.

We have 245 million English speakers, 41.3 million Spanish speakers,
3.4 million speakers of various Chinese dialects, and 865,000 Hindi
speakers.

Which one do you think is going to get "press 1" for them?

LOL

It seems to me that immigrants try harder. In many cases they were poor
in their home country, they know what it means to be poor, they don't
like it, and they know the opportunity that didn't exist where they born
is here in the US, "the land of opportunity", to change that. Middle
income Americans born here may share the same carrot, but they aren't
fleeing the same stick, poverty.

It also seems to be that immigrants have selected themselves from all
those in their home countries with the same reasons to leave, and the
ones who came are the most ambitious. That's why so many have done well,
and a smaller group has made major contributions to the country.

If it required more than average ambition to come here from Europe, when
all one needed was to get to city with ships coming to America and pay
the $30 fare, imagine how much ambition it takes to leave South America,
make one's way on foot through the Darien Gap, though all of Central
America and Mexico. You will see in 20 or 30 years how many of these
people and their children (and later their granchildren) have made
outstanding contributions to America and the World.

So how do you account for Octoberfests all across the country, for the
Swedish Social Hall and all the other ethnos-based social organizations.
Do you think they spoke English there?

Do you expect your parents to make fun of their grandparents by telling
you stories about how your g-granmdmother couldn't speak English and
your g-grandfather could but people could barely unnderstand him? Did
you make fun of your grandparents to your children?

> Nowadays though, not so much. That's why

I don't want that weighing me down, so I refuse to use the apple or
google calendars. I've done much better with my life since I stopped.

BTW, how did you do in school? Where you valedictorian? Maybe at least
Salutatorian? And how did your children do in school?

If any children of immigrants beat out you or your children, how did you
account for that?

> They didn't expect Americans to address them in

Who expects that? Nobody has ever expected it from me.

Of course if you want to be nice, it's a nice thing to do, but you don't
want to be nice, do you?

Cindy's right about this, and your view of exceptionalism is not
exceptional. It just like that the ethnic nationalism of the warring
nations of Europe before WWII**, that of the warring nature of the
Balkan countries.

**And it only stopped to the extent it has because they had a bigger
enemy.

You should find out what has made America exceptional. It's not what
you think.

In a rare instance I agree with micky. Judging from the surnames the
majority of the black students were immigrants from Africa.

They need a better lobby. The library put up signage in English and
Spanish. You would have to search far and wide in this state to find
anyone fluent in Spanish. The pharmacy at one of the local grocery stores
is more attached to reality. The 'for your privacy blah blah' sign is in
English, one of the Hmong dialects and Russian.

How the Hmong wound up here is a long story involving General Vang and the
CIA but they hit the ground running. I'm not sure about the generations
but the ones I've worked with who were in their late 20s were completely
acclimatized. They like big pickup trucks and guns like everybody else
around here.

Unlike the 41.3 million Spanish speakers they weren't catered to, nor are
the Russians.

My mother's hospital has signage in English and Arabic.

Of course, the list I referenced doesn't indicate bilingualism.

The entire issue is a tempest in a teapot.

Like most ad hominem attacks, this one misses the mark. You clearly
failed to understand the point.

It's not "horrible" to see those things. Rather, it's disheartening as
they are bellwether indicators of the rapidly increasing dilution and
mongrelization of our exceptionalist American culture.

That's exactly what they said about the Irish and the Italians.

Yes, our exceptionalist American culture. No Irish need apply, etc.

The mongrelization is what made us what we are. Should we have stopped
all immigration with the Mayflower?

I invariably find that when people use words like "mongrel", they're

It's hard to spot, but we've got one. Sure, it's gotten a little
battered in the last few decades, but it's still there.
