I just changed the belt on an old GE dryer one of my kids had.

I hadn't done this task before, and some of the youtube videos made it look a little intimidating with all the wires you had to disconnect, and the difficult access reaching under the drum, or the removal of the drum.

Well, this dryer is ancient, supposedly from the 70s. And it had something I've never seen before - an access panel on the back, easily removable and with full access to the motor and idler pulley. We still had to pull the front dover out a bit to get the new belt over the drum, because the bearing is on the back, but then the rest of the job was easy from the back. This thing was built to be maintained.

About 5 years ago I was forced to replace my old Inglis dryer
< very reluctantly > when the grill insde the drum rusted away
to the point where it was snagging clothes. I searched high & low
and could not get a replacement ... I was even considering a DIY
cover-up grill but decided to buy a new dryer.
If you can keep the old appliances going with just minor repairs
- do it !
