The 13 colonies were autonomous but it turned out to be too little
(under sufficient central government tax pressure).

Autonomy is a very wide term. Even PRC "recent restraints" keep HK in
*wide* autonomy range. So "charges" against PRC should be more
specific to target wider audience IMHO.

Apples and oranges.
The 13 colonies were British settler colonist with a lot of autonomy. British colonist
crossed the ocean to the New World to forcefully take land from the native. They also
had to fought settler colonists from other country such as France. For instance,
George Washington had fought other settler colonist from France for Britain before he
led the independence army.
