Blades are not flat - they are curved (airfoils) so are much more
effective one way than the other

Depends on the fan. My ceiling fan blades are pretty flat. They're
designed to switch rotation direction for summer/winter operation.

Bi-directional blades wouldn't be able to efficiently use the airfoil
effect both ways so flat blades will be equal efficiency both ways.

That said, the ceiling fan above my head has airfoil shaped stainless
steel blades and it can be set for both directions of rotation.
Obviously preference made for the primary flow direction - down!

It's just a fan. It will push both ways equally.

But I see no point in pushing up. You want air blown onto you for cooling.
