Scientists got more energy out of a fusion reaction than they put in.

Unfortunately, the 2 megajoules they compare to the 3 megajoules output
is the laser input at the test point, not the 300 megajoules it took to
produce that 2 megajoules of laser power.

Great post. I was wondering about that.

Seems they are getting ahead of themselves
a bit. But it is still a step in the
right direction.

And no discussion of the massive neutron radiation
fusion causes.

Which they pointed out repeatedly in the press conference.

Where they also noted that the 40+ year-old design lasers are
less than 1% efficient, and modern lasers are 20%
efficient, which reduces the input power by a factor of 5 or more.

They also noted that only about 4% of the D-T fuel in the
capsule was actually fused, which implies that more efficient
lasers and improved designs can multiply the output power by
several orders of magnitude over time.

They were also clear on that fact that this was primarily related
to stockpile management and that commercial development isn't part
of their mandate, with commercial introduction as power stations
decades into the future.

Did you noticed all the articles that say fusion has
no waste product? Hmmmmmm and that shielding to
stop the neutron flood is definitely hazardous waste!

But it was a great day for former Michigan Governor Jennifer Grandtheft
