CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) � A man has been charged with first-degree murder
for the shooting death of a West Virginia State Police trooper.

Timothy D. Kennedy, 29, of Matewan was arraigned Saturday morning by Mingo
County Magistrate Jim Harvey on the capital offense that carries a
possible penalty of life in prison, if convicted. He is accused of
shooting and killing Sgt. Cory Maynard.

Kennedy was captured just before 11 p.m. on Friday following a massive
manhunt for him in the Beech Creek area of the county that started around
2 p.m. that day.

State Police said Kennedy shot and killed Maynard as he responded to a
shooting complaint with two other troopers in the 4200 block of Beech
Creek Drive.

Investigators said Benjamin Adam Baldwin, 39, of Matewan was found to be
seriously injured after being shot with a rifle. Troopers said Baldwin was
taken to CAMC General Hospital to receive medial attention and is reported
to be in stable condition.

State Police said as of Saturday, the motive for the shooting is unknown.

More than 100 law enforcement officers from around the area converged on
Beech Creek to locate Kennedy who was considered armed and dangerous. A
West Virginia State Police helicopter was also called in to assist in the
search.

Troopers said Kennedy was in a stolen car and speeding when he was
captured at a command post that law enforcement had set up in the area.

Kennedy is being held at the Southwestern Regional Jail with no bond set.
