When a building collapses in the U.S., it's news.

When a building collapses in China it's not news, it's to be expected:

Well the building in Florida was built in 1981
curiously....

The Steel Import Crisis April 29, 1982

181 April 29, 1982 THE STEEL. IMPORT CRISIS INTRODUCTION I

America and Europe are again at war over steel. In March 1980,
U.S. Steel filed anti-dumping suits against the producers
of the European Economic Community, charging them with selling
large volumes of steel in the U.S. at prices well below
their cost of production. The Carter Administration, under
pressure from its Europ e an partners, negotiated an end
to the dispute

While in China...

In the 1980s, China was a major importer of foreign steel,
since its domestic steel production was not able
to keep up with domestic demand.

The Condo is about 3 miles from where I live in Miami.
The mom of my boss was lost in the collapse.

The problem was not "Chinese steel" ... the problem
was decades of SALT spray and immersion - combined
with the reluctance of the condo inhabitants to foot
the sizable bill for desperately needed restorations.

It was noted that the "basement", parking level, under
the building had salt water up to two+ feet deep in it
as often as twice a week. 40 YEARS of that and ....

Steel-reinforced concrete is always a disaster in the
making. Concrete is porous, and ALWAYS develops fine
cracks. Moisture gets in, to the steel. It rusts and
expands and destroys the concrete. You see old structures
built during and shortly after WW-2, especially Russian
ones, that crumbled practically to dust within a few
decades. Steel gives strength to concrete, and dooms
it at the same time.

Meanwhile, somewhat "overbuilt" stone and concrete
structures from the Roman empire STILL stand ...
no rebar.

Galvanized/coated rebar, or, better, stainless rebar,
is a damned good thing, especially for seaside structures.
SS is subject to fatigue however, so you have to be
careful how you use it.

The bitch though, "better" rebar CO$TS.

And the much MUCH bigger issue is how MANY large
seaside condos/hotels were built around the same
timeframe from SC all the way down south. They
are ALL likely in the SAME horrible condition.

In short, they have to be demolished - displacing
vast quantities of people who paid hundreds of
thousands to a million bucks for the units.
This is an untenable DISASTER for insurers, they
don't have a fraction of the money required to
pay for all this.

Saw some photos the other day of condos in New
Smyrna Beach FLA with a mass of temporary support
jacks on every level holding up the outside
walkways. In short, they're all ROTTEN to the
bone. Just the tip of the iceberg ... probably
a terabuck worth of lethal real-estate on the
east coast alone.

This is MAJOR shit.
