Exactly. I always saw it as a bit condescending or worse for carnies to call their customers marks. I sometimes saw them as victims and was afraid to overwork them. I was bad at it and knew it from the start. But I was a good worker. I made less money than most because if customer weren't lined up I would usually not do so well. I would look at carnies working 'the marks' and wonder how they're still alive. But you are right, some people enjoy it - it's part of the game, even if it's one I don't like.

Our top grosser, a guy named Wayne, I was in the tent with him a lot and saw him do some incredible shit to lure passerby to the tent, even after some would wave him off and say, "No way." He was good at doing something I did not much respect. One time he took a kid for $35 or so in the "break-a-dish" game. The next day the kid stopped by and I was in the tent alone. Wayne was out. Why I can't remember. It was rare, very rare, for him to not be there. He'd get out to take a piss or something and would see someone coming down the midway and hop back over the counter to snare him. A real tiger. But I saw him as a predator of sorts. So here's this kid he took and I'm thinking the kid hates his guts before the kid says, "Where's the guy from yesterday?", and I said, "I don't know, he stepped out for a minute." Then the kid paused and looked at me with eyes of awe as if thinking back to yesterday before asking with stars in his eyes, "Are you as good as he is?" I laughed and said, "I hope not." I did not get the kid to play. I think he donated a few bucks. But he wanted Wayne. It was an eye opener.
