Watching Pter Gunn, one of the cheapest and most minimalist TV shows ever.  But tonight I am blown away.  They just showed a scene with more than 5 people, about the most extravagant Gunn episode I've ever seen.
  
As the show came on I imagined I was not alone - that I was sitting with someone and raving to them about the show's prize winning minimalism.  I was in full glory.  "Look at it, look at it", I booned, "I'm telling you they never have more than 3 people in a single scene", and then all of a sudden they hit me with this one rare extravagant episode and it's like I'm a liar all of a sudden.  Either than or my concept of minimalism is screwed up.

"You said it was minimal", the guy says.  "I don't see anything minimal about it. Maybe you don't know what real minimalism is."

"So I'm either a fool or a liar, is that  it?", I countered.

"Not entirely.  I believe you saw the show as minimal and I believe you have a decent concept of minimalism.  But but I've watched a lot more film than you ever have - so I know what I'm talking about and you don't."

I'll make it short.  Things got out of hand and I had to get rough with the guy.  But it was self defense, he came at me.

"I'll pound your eyes till they swell up triple normal size", he boomed, rushing me.  "I'm gonna balloon you up punk.  Gonna beat you big."

"Just the opposite from me, loser", I countered, "I'm gonna minimalize your ass."

Then I grabbed him by the ears and rubbed them rough like two sticks to make a fire.  Slowly over a period of a day I saw bits of steam beginning to emerge from his head which was shrinking before my very eyes. When I was done he was nothing but ears and believe me he was listening to everything I had to say.
 
"Isn't that right, punk?"   See, I've got him right here.  Tied up.  He's mine. He's not going anywhere.  I am going to teach this punk was minimalism is all about.  Before it's over he's going to wish for less of everything I have to throw his way.

You catch on quick. You passed the test. Of course the post was not about minimalism at all. That was just a cover. The post was about irony. And you got it. Once again you have passed even the sternest of my tests. But don't worry, I'll trip you up one day. Just like Girard with Kimble my dedication will not allow me to ever quit. I don't know when it's going to happen, but believe me, one day I'm going to trip you up.

They made a movie out of that show with the Star Trek guy Hans Solo. In the old days they made TV shows from movies like 12 Oclock Hi. Now it is opposite. Soon it will go back and forth until we all get dizzy.

Most movies made from TV shows never live up to the TV shows. Some do ok. "The Fugitive" was not bad as a movie. I enjoy the show - it got huge ratings and is talked about to this day - but it was very predictable, every week Kimble settled into a new town with a new job only to have to leave in a hurry after being ID'd be someone with Girard in hot pursuit. I have never seen the 2 part finale. I read that it was disappointing for many but was one of the first, if not the first ever, episodic finale to a TV show at that time. I have almost always had more respect for TV than the movies, and that goes triple today.

Movies are dead. It is streaming that the kids want. They can fuck at home. Their parents don't care. Many parents are the ones doing the fucking.

Sincerely all these different forms of delivery mean nothing to me as I tend to see them all as the same thing. Radio, TV, computer, whatever - it's still a screen. It's still music, or what passes for it. It's the same content. It's all luxury of a form I suspect. But it's also not far removed from different ways to die - making different choices that wind up pretty much the same in the end - like getting to chose how you're going to die after being sentenced to death. Reminds me of how Daisy once got all defensive on me when I told her she was too plugged in. She started raving about no longer getting cable or using more conventional media. "We don't use the plug", she said. "I am not plugged in." She can't be that stupid. She knew what I meant. She and her ilk are plugged in always whether the plugs can be seen or not. Whatever these kids want they're going to get the same shit that flows through all channels leading to the big sweet sewer of life.

I was born to be a beat poet but I was a few years too late. No beat poets in the 70's. It was all rock and roll and long hair. True beats never listened to rock and roll and they had short hair.

And they applaud by clicking their fingers. I knew a few genuine beats whose fingers were so worn down from applauding they quit the beats and joined the hippies in the latter stages of the beat movement. I think a lot of beat stuff is pure fiction for the screen alone, like fast-draw gunfights of the old west. I like the way they present the beat scene in movies even if it's phony. I know, I was hep before it was hip. Dig.
