Why have we not heard much explanation from news media about why the
Manhattan DA investigation against Trump has been dropped? It has been a
couple of weeks since the assistant DAs resigned.
Because,

The theory of prosecution is that Donald Trump defrauded Deutschbank
into giving him huge loans by overstating the value of his holdings,
mainly NYC real estate, and thus tricking Deutschbank into giving him
more money than the collateral was worth. This led to tax fraud by
understating the amount of his income, which is why the Manhattan DA
Cyrus Vance Jr. and the New York State Attorney General Letitia James
fought so hard to get his IRS records from the federal government, which
has had access to them for decades.

First, Deutschbank is no babe in the woods. It is a large international
corporation which has financed NYC real estate for decades. Like other
large banks, it is expert in such finance and has a large staff which is
very familiar with the real estate market and the property it regularly
deals with and finances. A property holder interesting in defrauding
Deutschbank would have a hard row to hoe in prying more money out of
Deutschbank than the collateral property is worth.

Deutschbank did not bring a fraud action against Trump. It does not see
itself as a victim. These charges were initiated by the former Manhattan
DA and the New York Attorney General. Deutschbank has indicated that the
Trump loan interest payments are up to date and that they are confident
he will make the principal payments when they come due in 2023 and 2024.
They would, however, be happy to sell the loans in order to get out from
under the pressure of ongoing investigations. This is unlikely.

Second, the IRS records have been available to and under audit by the
federal government for as long as Trump has been a billionaire, an
experience alien to politicians who make their money after they enter
politics. During all this time, no tax fraud investigation has emerged
against Trump, whose business dealings have been available to any
professional federal investigator, especially during the Obama
presidency when the records were available to and in the custody of
Obama and IRS Director John Koskiinen, neither exactly exactly Trump
devotees.

There should be no question they’ve been gone over many times in search
of a viable tax fraud prosecution.

What has also been available has been the opportunity to skewer Trump
with more of the fraudulent and unproductive media allegations we have
heard for 5 years. But now that Trump is out of office, these years-old
investigations are also running out of fuel, since no chargeable crimes
have been discovered.

Newly elected Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg recognizes this. He has his own
vision for criminal prosecution in the borough and it does not include
squandering large portions of his budget on a pursuit of Trump which
will never come to fruition. He has other eggs to fry and he wants the
manpower and money assigned to political Trump fantasies back dealing
with real Manhattan crime. If he has his way, and he will, no new
revelations from his quarter will emerge.
