Media accountability in a world of disinformation

Join the Alan Alda Center’s Laura Lindenfeld and the
News Literacy Project’s Alan Miller in conversation with
the Knight Foundation’s Paul Cheung to discuss how we can
identify and combat growing disinformation. Our conversation
springs from the Bulletin’s May/June magazine on how to
dial back a disinformation dystopia.

Speakers

Laura Lindenfeld is the executive director of the Alan Alda
Ctr for Communicating Science, the dean of the School of
Communication & Journalism, & the vice provost for academic
strategy & planning at Stony Brook University. At the Alda
Center, Dr. Lindenfeld oversees an international leader in
science communication training, research, & education. As
dean of the School of Communication & Journalism, she leads
a team of award-winning faculty in educating multimedia
journalists & communication professionals. Dr. Lindenfeld's
research focuses on how we can advance meaningful, productive
interactions with communities & decision-makers by strongly
linking knowledge & action. Her work has appeared in a range
of journals, & her book was published by Columbia University
Press. She has a Ph.D. in cultural studies from the University
of California, Davis.

Alan Miller is the founder & CEO of the News Literacy Project,
a national nonpartisan education nonprofit. He established
NLP in 2008, following a 21-year career at the Los Angeles
Times, to give middle & high school educators the tools to
teach their students how to separate fact from fiction in
the digital age. NLP is now the nation’s leading provider of
news literacy education. It offers programs & resources for
educators & the public to teach, learn & share the abilities
needed to be smart, active consumers of news & information &
equal & engaged participants in democracy. During his journalism
career, Alan received more than a dozen national reporting
honors, including the 2003 Pulitzer for National Reporting.
Most recently, Alan was named a 2020 Washingtonian of the
Year. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University and has a
master’s degree in political science from the Univ of Hawaii.

Moderator: Paul Cheung
Paul Cheung manages a multimillion-$$ investment portfolio
at the Knight Foundation. His key investment areas include
scaling AI, business sustainability solutions, & mitigating
misinformation. Cheung has 20 years of experience in leading
digital transformation — pioneering artificial intelligence,
VR/AR & digital training initiatives. He led cross functional
teams of journalists, technologists, data-scientists &
designers, at media outlets including NBC News Digital, The
Associated Press, The Miami Herald, & The Wall Street Journal.
