Indeed. The way the universe is set up, survival requires production.

That said, humans can produce far more than they consume so having a
few poverty stricken leeches to use up some of that extra production
isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Hardly. Cura Annonae was a building block of early Roman power. The
western Roman Empire's decline began centuries after it was

Most folks don't understand the differences between socialism and
communism.

First off, capitalism, socialism and communism are not political
systems, they're economic systems. Democracy and totalitarianism are
political systems. The US enjoyed democratic politics with a
capitalist economy modified with some socialism. The USSR was
straight up totalitarian and communist.

Second, communism didn't bring the USSR down, totalitarianism and
Russia's endemic corruption did. Had the Soviets had a free society
with fair and open elections between multiple parties, and a
population with more honest and ethical values the USSR might still be
around even under a communist economy.

Thirdly, Socialism is about societies banding together under a
governing umbrella to ensure certain tasks get done on a national
scale. Defense is one example, Public Health is another and America
*invented* the National Park which is also a socialist function.

Finally, communism is VERY different. Under communism, there is no
private property, the People hold everything "in common" which works
out to the State owning it all. Communism can be a valuable economic
system when groups are small, when everybody knows everybody else and
when leaders respond to the needs and desires of the populace. Most
early US colonies on the eastern seaboard began as "communes". From
each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

When a society gets so big that most of its people are strangers to
each other, the system becomes untenable. When leadership functions
for itself or when corruption and petty crime are perfectly accepted
values, the society crumbles.

Look at the most successful nations. They all have freedom of choice
to *some* degree or another but more importantly, they have less
corruption than poorer nations. Poverty engenders corruption and
corruption engenders poverty.
