Former US Navy (1998–2010 Updated February 9, 2020

As a law enforcement officer, a National Guard soldier or as a full time
soldier, if you are ordered to take American citizen's guns, would you
follow that order or would you stick to the U.S. Constitution's 2nd
Amendment and refuse the order?

As a retired military member, combat soldier and trainer, I've been in
contact with thousands of active duty soldiers, sailors, and marines.
This question is asked surprisingly often by the active duty personnel.
What should we do if we are ordered to take weapons from civvies???

My answer is always the same. What was your oath? Was it to follow all
orders? Or was it to follow all lawful orders in defense of the
constitution against all threats foreign AND DOMESTIC?

An order to violate the constitution is unlawful and a threat against
the constitution by a domestic threat. To fulfill your oath, you must
report the unlawful order and wait for command to respond with a lawful
order. If they attempt to force you into fulfilling the unlawful order,
you go up the chain of command and report. While waiting for the next
level to respond, you place the threat under arrest and in holding. I've
had only one soldier state they would follow the order given as given
and let the chips fall as they may. This particular soldier was taken
aside by his CO and had his oath explained to him so that he could
understand that “i was just following orders" is not a defense that is
acceptable at his court martial.
