Checks are the only way to pay rent where I live. Want to buy a used car directly, you can write a cashiers check to buyer, who then cashes right away to get the money, and your cashed check proves payment.

I still use checks for anything that has to be mailed and
cash for everything else.

If you use anything besides checks, money orders (expensive
and inconvenient), or cash to pay for taxes or fees to
the county they add on a hefty "convenience fee" that's
a percentage of the bill. That can be significant for
real estate or personal property taxes which are high enough
without paying extra.

I'm debt-free, so I must be doing something right.
