But construction sites with nothing but the construction people are fine.

The odds of a vaccinated person getting Covid are so small now. Are all these restrictions doing more harm than good? The rules were arbitrary from the start. Our governments could've just said this is what we know, we suggest
citizens do such and such. A bureaucrat sitting in a city office has no idea what's happening in small town Montana.
Some figures about how dangerous Covid is now.

Don't counties in Montana report to the state health authorities? I can
see what the COVID infection rates are anywhere in Michigan. Only about
10 (staunchly Republican) counties in Michigan have worrisome infection
rates.

Ah, here we are:

Depends on what you consider small. With the original Covid variants, the vaccines were
only shown to be about 95% effective in preventing symptomatic infection. We learned
later that more than 5% are getting infected without symptoms. And with Delta the
numbers have gotten worse. With case numbers surging again, back up to the levels
of January in some states, the odds of a vaccinated person getting Covid are not
what I would call small.

The rules were arbitrary from the start. Our governments could've just said this is what we know, we suggest
> citizens do such and such.

And given the resistance, the refusals by a large portion of the population, that would
not have been nearly as effective.

>A bureaucrat sitting in a city office has no idea what's happening in small town Montana.

??? Surely the city office in that town knows, the governor knows what
is happening in small towns in their state.

That's the good news. But protection from dying from Covid is different from
not getting infected.

That's a nice resource - county-by-county ..
Our Provincial data and County data require a bit more
drilling-into and study / interpretation.

I totalled the Montana County daily averages = 101 ;
Montana population 1 million.
Ontario population almost 15 million is running ~ 160 per day.
I like to see the graphs for "trends" also :

A bureaucrat from this small town in Montana sitting on the county
health board mandated masks early in the game. Other counties did not.
It's worth mentioning it's also one of the few towns that voted for
Clinton, Biden, or whatever other yellow dog is running.

Actually the counties were marching to their own drummers. The
Democratic governor ordered a state wide mandate in July 2020. We fired
him in November and the mandate was lifted in February.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/montana/articles/2021-02-12/montana-governor-lifts-statewide-mask-mandate

We fired most of the Democrats; in 2022 we'll probably get rid of the US
Senator with a D after his name.

They aren't that small, 250 new ones a day with well over 50
having already spread the infection by the time they have
been identified isn't small. And that's with the heavy restrictions.
It would be a lot higher with no restrictions at all and would
have seen a lot more than the current 12 killed by the virus.

> Are all these restrictions doing more harm than good?

Only if you don’t care about those who are killed
and the something like 30% who end up with very
severe health downsides from long covid.

> The rules were arbitrary from the start.

But vastly better than nothing. That’s the reason Australia
and New Zealand have ended up with a vastly better result
than the USA and UK, let alone India and Indonesia.

And Australia and New Zealand haven't even ended up
with a worse GDP result than the USA and the UK either.

We have certainly ended up with a worse result for some
of those who were out of the country when the restrictions
on even citizens returning were introduced, but there will
always be some real downsides with any pandemic. We
did the same thing the spanish flu too, quite a few of the
troops returning from europe weren't allowed to land
and had to stay on the ships at sea until it was clear that
no one on the ship was infected.

> Our governments could've just said this is what

That’s bullshit. And it isn't the small town Montana that
matters anyway, it’s the big citys. We have quite different
restrictions that apply in small towns outside Greater
Sydney that includes Wollongong and Newcastle than
apply in Greater Sydney. Basically just masks indoors in
shops etc and sign in at the door electronically so you
can be notified if it later turns out that an infected
person had been there so you can isolate etc. Really
just a minor nuisance at most.

> Some figures about how dangerous Covid is now.

It isn't just death that matters, something like 30% who get infected
end up with long term very bad health downsides with long covid.

Makes sense to have restrictions until the vast majority of the
population have been vaccinated with vaccines which have
been shown to work against the current rampant strains.

Wowsers. They're actually having the military involved in this.

Nope, fewer restrictions than there should have been.
If that had been done early on, there wouldn’t need to
be restrictions now.

And we did with internal state border crossings too previously.

And that’s why we got a vastly better result with the virus than you lot
did.

There are hundreds of quotes about tyranny. I like this one from C.S. Lewis
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
