Hello!

Is there a special term for the beep that sounds at the checkstand in
the supermarket when the cashier scans the products?

Imagine if all supermarkets used bells. It would be a real cacophony.

Didn't the ladies on the tills in French supermarkets once acquire a
nickname which was derived from the beeping sound?

Nor I, and I can find nothing online. It's not "Justine Caissière" anyway.

I not a fan of supermarket shopping, especially where one is pushed
towards self-service tills. There always seems to be some problem with
these - and I feel there should be a discount for our doing the work
that the cashier would do - which there isn't, of course.

For some years now, we've had our groceries delivered. This is cheap and
works very well, at least since we swapped from Sainsbury's to Tesco. A
useful trick is to finalise the order the day before, by which time the
computers seem to have a very good idea of what's going to be available.
(I don't think the picking is done in a dark store, which would be even
more predictable.)

It would be interesting to know the sound on which that is based. I
suspect the French would have their own version of the BrE 'beep' ('le
bip'?). After all, their animals make different sounds than ours.

Yes. For example, French cocks say "cocorico" whereas British ones say
"cock-a-doodle-do".

We are not paid for collecting the wares ourselves either.

I scan with my mobile and pay at the exit. It's much easier for me: No
queue (so far), and I can collect the wares in my bag so I don't have to
shift them from the basket.

Some are organised on a quite different system.

Here's a view of one Ocado depot (not the one our groceries come from).

Amazon Fresh works in between dark and light. It's open to walk-in
customers, but most of the traffic is staff picking orders.

Amazon Fresh is reportedly abandoning the AI checkout approach; it
seems that the mechanical turk makes mistakes.

Presumably you'll find examples if you search the dark web.

Which gave me a brief mental image of a country which has been trimmed
to some exact multiple of one metre.
What do they do with the offcuts?

I think everyone has such doubts, and it's true there is a small failure
rate. One can always inspect and reject. Sprouts, caulis, and potatoes
are fine, bananas always better than Intermarché ones (which rarely look
as good inside as outside). The size of onions and parsnips is sometimes
a surprise (but one can order by weight). Small tomatoes are safer than
large ones, since they can move past each other in the pack. And I'd not
buy pears online - I like to grope their ends.

Inch units are just as common (or more) as metric units when we talk
