Everyone "of a certain age" remembers the morning Ruby and Oswald came together. And most of us, VIVIDLY so.

And most recall November 24th in 1963 was a Sunday--not a Friday like today is, and indelibly like November 22nd was that afternoon when Oswald catapulted into the national consciousness.

But we would have less than 48 hours in which to get to know the now-forever-three-named, self-proclaimed Marxist (though his co-workers, pals and family always called him only Lee).

I wasn't watching from suburban St. Louis the coverage that morning (at 10:15 am Central time) of the prisoner transfer down in the Dallas PD Hq garage. Instead, I was in line at the nearby junior high school, awaiting a taste of the newfangled Sabin oral polio vaccine. Our llne was serpentine, snaking around threee-quarters of the sizable building. I first heard the Oswald shooting news 20 or so minutes after it happened, while eavesdropping on an exchange five or six people ahead of me: a man offered something to the effect of, "Yeah, that Oswald guy did it." To which a passing woman replied, "Now they got HIM, too!" and of course related what little she knew to all of us within earshot.

But even if I had still been watching TV as we had been all weekend,, I'd still just as likely been watching CBS* as NBC. And if so, I'd have ANYWAY missed watching live history's first telecast murder--because only NBC had it live.

Those who WERE watching NBC at that moment** found it perhaps more disturbing than the JFK and Connoly shootings two days prior, simply because they could SEE it, unlike on Friday. (Footage of Dealey Plaza, by Abe Zapruder or others wouldn't be seen at all that weekend, and Zapruder's brain-blasting Frame #313 was first shown in motion nationally in 1975, on Geraldo Rivera's "Goodnight America" production on ABC.)

Anyway, I thought what with November 24th being forever All Things Oswald, y'all might appreciate another shot at the link below.

** To paraphrase the late Texas Senator Lloyd Bentson: John Warnock Hinckley, Jr. is no Lee Harvey Oswald. Still, the now-freed UNsuccessful assassin Hinckley DID personally inform me--as part of a journalistic project on the Reagan shooting in an extended, written 1988 interview--that he at age 9 WERE watcing NBC live (along with his mother and sister) just then. He clearly recounted watching NBC (on a portable set positioned on a dinette chair, the three facing the windows but of course glued to the tube) in the kitchen of their Dallas-area home. Hinckley however didn't comment on how he REACTED to the experience, he merely described it.

Sorry, I listed the Oswald transfer as just after 10:15 am local Dallas (i.e. Central) time, but as reported in Eastern time--thus erroneously subtracting an hour.

It was 11:21 am Central Ttime (and barely 15 seconds after Ruby weaseled his way down into the garage crowd), but of course for the networks based in New York, the shot rang out at 12:21 pm, Sunday, November 24, 1963.

(I regret my error. Glad I at least remembered to "fall back" earlier this month.)

John W. Hinckley, Jr. was 8 on Sunday, November 24, 1963, not 9 years of age.

I make a point of calling the man who shot up a Texas church in 2017
"Devin Patrick Kelley" out of respect for the actress Devin Kelley who
should not be confused with him,but news media seem to have stopped
using his middle name when they write about him.

Louis, the lady who I overheard saying that while walking down the junior-high hallway (where I was in line for the polio vaccine) had surely just heard the news HERSELF a minute or so prior, and either (1) it hadn't been described to her as a lone gunman (much less with one with the name Ruby) or (2) jumped to the conclusion that it was the Mafia, the FBI, the CIA, the Secret Service, the KGB, etc. (take your pick of that or any other "they" in her mind).

But she DID definitely use the word "they". Even though I never saw her again and she wasn't saying it to me but rather a guy several people ahead of me AND on the other side of the hallway--that interminable vaccine line was so long it snaked down BOTH sides of the hallway, in opposite directions; the man was on the other side, and she was walking toward me, which is why I can picture her face six decades later; don't recall a BIT about the man she said it to, other than he was 50ish, somewhat overweight, and white. She was white too, but somewhat younger middle-aged.)

(As I described in my November 24, 1963 recounting, while EVERYONE has Friday afternoon burned into their memories, I'm always amazed at how many people say they have NO IDEA what they were doing when the Oswald news reached them. To me, that morning is EVERY BIT as indelible in my mind as all the goings on were on Friday afternoon, November 22nd (when I got the news amid a 3rd grade spelling test).

I missed it because my father sent me to the deli to buy him
cigarettes. I really never forgave that.
