Elliot Silverstein -Of Los Angeles, CA, formerly of Boston, passed on November 24, 2023.in Los Angeles at age 96. Elliot was a long time Film and Television director.
He directed Lee Marvin and Jane Fonda in the 1965 comedy western "Cat Ballou "in which Lee Marvin won an Academy Award. He also directed" The Happening "in 1967 and the Richard Harris Film "A Man Called Horse". He also directed the cult hit "The Car' starring Jon Rubenstein.
Elliot directed many of the epic programs in the beginning of Television, Omnibus, episodes of the 1960 Iconic hit" Route 66 "starring George Maharis and Martin Milner. The show ran for four years on CBS. Among other Television shows he directed were episodes of "The Twilight Zone", The Defenders, "Tales from the Crypt". "Have Gun Will Travel", Dr. Kildare, Naked City.
He directed Arthur Miller's Play "The Crucible" at Washington's Arena Stage..
He received The Directors Honorary Life Member Award Guild Award, DGA Robert B. Aldrich Achievement Award, and The Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing -Feature Film. After his retirement he taught film at USC.
He is survived by his brother Jason Silverstein.
Private graveside service will be held in Boston.

I just saw "The Car" a few days ago - it's an amazingly good horror/suspense movie.

But I find it odd that the obit describes it as "starring Jon Rubenstein." The actor (whose name is actually spelled John Rubinstein) only plays a minor role and is killed off within the first half hour. James Brolin is the film's star, and Ronny Cox, R.G. Armstrong and Kathleen Lloyd have substantial roles.

Silverstein directed four episodes of The Twilight Zone; his first was the great episode "The Obsolete Man," with Burgess Meredith as a librarian in a stark, futuristic totalitarian state, and Fritz Weaver as the chancellor who sentences Meredith to death.

Also worth noting is that the first of Silverstein's three wives was actress Evelyn Ward; she had previously been married to Jack Cassidy and was the mother of David Cassidy.

First, it's John Rubenstein and second, the star of the film was James
Brolin.

It's about a sentient car that kills people. "The CAR is in the
GARAGE!!!"

Thanks, Diner, for your marital data regarding the late (and I'd argue great) Jack Cassidy.

Though I don't think I've ever seen more than a few scenes (and never a complete episode) of "The Partridge Family", I always assumed (without ever looking into it) that David Cassidy's mother was [the still-very-much-alive at 89] Shirley Jones...since like most folks tracking Hollywood, I knew she and the senior Cassidy were formerly married.

But now you've cleared that up in my ever-clouded mind, and I'm grateful.
