I just saw him two months ago playing with the Furs. Excellent musician who played with a lot of energy. And he played great solos on those Waitresses records like "I Know What Boys Like" and "Christmas Wrapping."
A real shame.

Had never heard of him; thanks for exposing us all to his unconventional sax work.

In this 2020 clip, the late horn man Williams seems pretty darned healthy; demonstrates how all of us may be only three years from demise. Or three days. Or even three hours. (Which is why I try to regularly re-listen to any of the dozens of versions of that familiar standard, "Enjoy Yourself" regularly--or just play it on piano myself in my roughhewn fashion; it IS (probably) later than we think.)

Presume that Mars was his stage name?

He was originally Marc Williams, one of six children. His baby brother
mispronounced Marc as Mars, and he went with that.
