The UK government introduced an absurdly generous feed-in tariff scheme
to encourage early adopters, and I took advantage of that back in 2011.
At that time, here in SE England with a near-ideal roof, the payback
period was going to be around twelve years. As it turned out, the panels
paid for themselves (plus the subsequent cost of adding pigeon netting)
in just eight years. Much of that is down to a steady increase in yield;
we initially generated around 3.5 MWh in a year, but now regularly
exceed 4 MWh. This year, inspite of a dull and wet September, we're
already over the 3.5 MWh mark. Add to that the increase in electricity
prices from the grid and it looks to have been a pretty good investment.

Indeed and it would be a plus point for a house sale. Solar panels have
become a lot more efficient in the recent past.

You mean new ones are better than the older ones I had fitted.
Our panels are entropically getting less efficient, unless our Mr Banarjee
can apply himself to thinking of a simple fix.
